Dutchmen down DuBois 64-49 in D9 League play
The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch basketball team used a strong second half to defeat the DuBois Area Beavers by a 64-49 score last night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.The Beavers held a 27-23 lead at the half. The Dutch were able to outscore DuBois by a 41-22 margin in the second half of the contest.“I didn’t think pressure bothered them and after the first quarter they had a substantial lead,” said St. Marys coach Mark Guido. “We really thought at halftime that we needed to put pressure on them and play our style of game.”He noted that the Dutch outscored the Beavers 23-8 in the third period of play.“Our early offense in the third quarter was huge,” Guido said. “Our second half was pivotal, as we were able to get into our uptempo.” The Dutch offense was led by Dylan Reigel with 14 points on four twos and two threes. Justin Quiggle added 11 points on two twos, one three and a four-for-four night from the foul line. Ryan Uhl finished with 11 rebounds for the Dutch.DuBois was led by Nate Liddle with 18 points on three twos and four threes. Tanner Gooden added 10 points on two twos and two threes.Ryan Mancuso gave the Dutch the early 2-0 lead. Quiggle and Liddle traded buckets. Jimmy Werner and Mancuso made field goals and Mancuso converted two technical foul shots to give St. Marys the 10-2 lead. Two foul shots by Dom Kriner made it 10-4. A three by Quiggle and a two by Liddle made it 13-6. Jordan Weinzierl converted two foul shots for St. Marys before Liddle hit a three, as St. Marys led 15-11 after the first period of play.Uhl scored off a putback to open the second quarter. Reigel hit a two and Gooden a three, 19-14. Uhl scored again for St. Marys before Garret Peterson and Kriner scored for DuBois, 21-18. A foul shot by Peterson made it 21-19. A three by Liddle gave DuBois the 22-21 lead. Liddle hit another three before Ryan Hockman scored for the Dutch, 25-23. Liddle scored off a putback to give the Beavers the 27-23 halftime lead.Werner’s foul shot opened the third period for the Dutch. Gooden answered for DuBois. The Dutch went on a 6-0 run as Mancuso hit a two, Reigel a three and Bob Vollmer a foul shot, and St. Marys took the 30-29 lead. Little and Reigel traded threes. Quiggle converted two foul shots and added a field goal. Werner, Uhl and Reigel had field goals as the Dutch led 43-32 with 1:35 left in the quarter. Gooden hit a three for DuBois, 43-35. Uhl sank a foul shot and Reigel added a field goal as the Dutch took a 46-35 lead with eight minutes remaining.Gooden and Reigel traded buckets to open the fourth quarter. Paul Butler sank two foul shots for the Beavers before Vollmer sank two for the Dutch. Vollmer added another one to give St. Marys the 51-39 lead with 5:32 left. Peterson sank two field goals to cut the Dutch lead to 51-43. A bucket by Werner made it 53-43. Quiggle sank two technical foul shots before Werner hit a field goal and Vollmer sank two foul shots, making it 59-43 with 2:56 left in the game. Peterson sank two DuBois foul shots. Hockman and Mark Felix of DuBois traded foul shots. A three by SMA’s Rocco Harshbarger made it 64-47.
