The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch football team evened their record at 1-1 on the season with a 33-7 victory over the Keystone Panthers Friday on Elementary Night at Dutch Country Stadium.
The Dutch scored in every quarter last night with the exception of the fourth on their way to the victory.
â€śWe did a much better job this week than we did last week,â€ť said Dutch coach Joe Schlimm. â€śWe played as a team this week and we came in with a good attitude. But we have a long way to go.â€ť
â€śI thought our guard play was very good. I thought Joe Luchini and Alex Feldbauer ran well and I liked the way Alex Coudriet ran our offense,â€ť said Schlimm.
â€śDefensively, weâ€™re getting better but weâ€™re not where we need to be. But we need to get better,â€ť added Schlimm.
The Dutch offense was led by Joe Luchini with 138 yards on 11 carries and one touchdown. Alex Feldbauer finished with 116 yards on 20 carries and two touchdowns. Jordan Straub picked up 103 yards on 11 carries. Quarterback Alex Coudriet was four of six for 79 yards and one touchdown. Coudrietâ€™s favorite target was Robbie Glass, who made three receptions for 54 yards and a touchdown.
For Keystone, quarterback Josh Eberhart was the leading rusher with 50 yards on 12 carries. He was 10 of 18 for 91 yards in the passing department. He threw one interception. Dutchman Tyler Yetzer came up with the pick late in the game.
The Dutch took the opening kickoff and started from their own 14 following a seven-yard return by Alexx Tyger. Feldbauer gained seven to the 21, with Luchini picking up five to the 26 for a first down. Feldbauer picked up five and Luchini two on second down. Third down saw a motion penalty against the Dutch and moved the ball back to the 28. A Coudriet pass was deflected by Glass and a Keystone defender into the hands of Dutchmen Alexx Tyger, good for 25 yards and a first down at the 47. Feldbauer picked up seven on first down and was held for no gain on second down. Coudriet connected with Glass on a 19-yard pass play, putting the ball on the Keystone 27. Three rushing plays by Feldbauer, Glass and Feldbauer put the ball on the 14. Luchini gained five to the nine, with Feldbauer going the final nine yards for the touchdown. Christian Keller split the uprights as the Dutch led 7-0 with 6:35 left in the first period.
The teams exchanged punts. Keystone started on their own 30 and were forced to punt from their own 22. The punt was blocked by Dutchman Joe Luchini as St. Marys took over on the eight-yard line. It took Feldbauer two plays as he scored from five yards out on the first play of the second quarter. Keller again split the uprights as the Dutch led 14-0 with 11:55 left in the first half.
Keystone marched down to the St. Marysâ€™ 20 before running out of down. St. Marys moved from their own 20 down to the Keystone four, where they fumbled and the Panthers took over. Keystone was forced to punt, with the Dutch taking over on their own 24.
Luchini gained nine to the 15. Feldbauer picked up six on second down and seven on first down to the Keystone two. Coudriet used the quarterback sneak to score the touchdown from two yards out as the Dutch led 21-0 with 2:49 left in the first half after Kellerâ€™s PAT.
The Panthers started from their own 37 and got as far as the Dutchmenâ€™s 16 before the half ended with St. Marys on top 21-0.
Keystone ran out of downs at their own 49 on their first possession of the second half. Feldbauer gained 15 yards to the 34 on first down. Luchini gained 24 to the 10. Feldbauer picked up a yard to the nine. A Luchini touchdown was called back because of a block below the knees, placing the ball at the 25-yard line. Feldbauer gained a yard to the 24. On third and goal, Coudriet found Glass for the 24-yard touchdown play. The PAT failed due to a bad snap as the Dutch led 27-0 with 7:32 left in the third period.
Keystone punted on their next possession, with St. Marys taking over on their own 34. Glass gained two to the 36, with Feldbauer gaining six on second down. Luchini gained 20 to the Panthersâ€™ 38-yard line. Glass gained three yards. After an incomplete pass on second down, Luchini went around the left side for a 35-yard touchdown run. The PAT was wide right as the Dutch led 33-0 with 3:04 left in the third period.
Keystone punted and the Dutch ran out of downs at the Keystone two-yard line on their next possession, three plays into the fourth quarter. The Panthers drove 98 yards in 12 plays, with quarterback Josh Eberhart scoring from three yards out with 6:32 left in the game, making the score 33-7 as Alex Rivers added the PAT.
St. Marys drove to the Keystone 10 before running out of downs. Dutchman Tyler Yetzer ended Keystoneâ€™s next drive with an interception. Dutch quarterback Willie McGonnell took a knee on first down as the Dutch won 33-7.
The Dutchmen are now 1-1 overall. They are 0-1 in the KSAC Big School Division.
St. Marys takes to the road next Friday as they travel to Brookville for a KSAC Big School contest. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
