The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch football team will open their 2012 campaign tonight when they play host to the Karns City Gremlins at 7 p.m. at Dutch Country Stadium.
This will be a Keystone Shortway Athletic Conference (KSAC) Big School contest.
The Dutchmen of coach Joe Schlimm are coming off a 2011 season that saw them finish with a 5-4 regular-season record. They ended their season with a 5-5 mark as they lost to the Clearfield Bison in the District 9-AAA championship contest.
Last year the Dutch opened their season on a four-game win streak as they defeated Brookville 34-28, Clarion-Limestone 44-6, Punxsutawney 34-12 and Clarion 20-16. They suffered a 39-15 loss at Moniteau, then bounced back to beat Redbank Valley 21-13 the following week.
St. Marys lost to the DuBois Beavers 27-12, Union 25-7 and Karns City 33-21 to end their regular season. They lost to the Clearfield Bison by a 28-7 score in the District 9-AAA championship game.
Karns City finished their 2011 season with an 8-4 record. They lost to Moniteau by a 26-12 score in the District 9-AA championship contest.
The Dutchmen will be a Class AA team for the 2012 season.
