The St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen recorded a 5-1 victory over the Bradford Owls on Wednesday afternoon at Berwind Park in St. Marys.
The Dutchmen scored twice in the second and added three more runs in the sixth while allowing the Owls to get one run in the seventh.
"It was a win," said St. Marys Area coach Tony Azzato. "We came out a little lazy the first couple innings. We were back on our heels a little bit in the box and on the field, but pitching has been keeping us in the past three games and it did again today."
Branden Tyger went the distance on the mound for the Dutchmen, giving up three hits, walking two, and striking out eight.
Ritchie Cromley started on the mound for Bradford, working five and two-thirds innings and giving up eight hits, walking three, and striking out four. Jonnie Burke worked the final third of an inning, walking one.
St. Marys was led offensively by Dalton Kline with a pair of singles. Mitch Meyer, Branden Tyger, Brandon Vollmer, Justin Beimel, Rudy Gleixner, and Luke Schreiber all singled.
Bradford's three hits came on a double by Tommy Smith and singles by Colton Holzworth and John Pantuso.
While the Dutchmen's offense helped them pick up the win, Azzato noted that the team still needs to work on its defense.
"Defensively, we've got to pick some things up. We made a couple errors today that we'll work on, but we need to get our heads focused when we're in the box too," Azzato said.
Both teams went down in order in the first inning.
With two outs in the top of the second, John Pantuso singled and advanced as Jonnie Burke walked. Tommy Smith grounded to the shortstop and was thrown out at first, keeping the Owls from scoring. The Dutchmen pushed in their first two runs in the bottom of the inning. With one out, Justin Beimel walked but was out at second on a fielder's choice that saw Robert Watts reach first. Watts later stole second and scored on a single by Rudy Gleixner. Quinn Cunningham walked, advancing Gleixner to second. Luke Schreiber singled, scoring Gleixner, and giving the Dutchmen a 2-0 lead.
Neither team scored in the third, fourth, or fifth innings.
After Tyger sent Bradford's batters down in order in the top of the sixth, the Dutchmen went to work padding their lead. Watts reached base on an error and advanced as Jerri Newell was thrown out at first on a fielder's choice. Another fielder's choice allowed both Cunningham to reach base and Watts to advance to third. Schreiber was thrown out at first on a fielder's choice, scoring Watts in the process and advancing Cunningham to third. Cunningham went on to score on a single by Mitch Meyer. Meyer advanced to second on a single by Dalton Kline and was sent on to third as Tyger was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Vollmer walked, scoring Meyer and keeping the bases loaded. Beimel grounded to the shortshop and was unable to beat the throw to first, ending the inning with St. Marys on top 5-0.
Bradford scored their lone run in the top of the seventh. With one out Smith, reached base on an error and later stole second and third. With two outs, Holzworth singled, scoring Smith. Hunter Dixon flied out to left field, ending the game with St. Marys taking the 5-1 win.
