The St. Marys Area Flying Dutch basketball team improved to 3-1 on the young season with a 65-40 victory over the DuBois Central Catholic Cardinals in a game played at the St. Marys Area Dutch Oven last night.
The Dutch had a very strong first half, which saw them go up by a 34-15 halftime lead. They outscored the Cardinals by a 23-9 margin in the third period, taking a 57-24 lead with eight minutes remaining. DuBois Central outscored the Dutch 16-8 in the final quarter, making the final score 65-40.
â€śWe did some extra shooting work on Saturday and tonight some of the kidsâ€™ hard work paid off,â€ť said St. Marys coach Mark Guido. â€śIt was nice to have three players in double figures and I was really impressed with the way Caleb (Bennett) got off to a great start.â€ť
The Dutch offense was led by Caleb Bennett and Justin Quiggle with 16 points each. Bennett had two twos and four threes, while Quiggle had four twos, two threes and a two-for-three night from the foul line. Jimmy Werner added 12 points on four field goals and a four-for-seven night from the foul line.
DuBois Central was led by Steve Sette with seven points. Jeremy Johnson and Sebastian Schenk each added six points.
The Dutch forced 17 first-half DuBois Central turnovers last night on their way to their early lead.

DuBois Central scored the opening points of the game on a putback by Dan Oâ€™Connor. Bennett hit a three for the Dutch, followed by Quiggle and Werner with twos, 7-2. Conner Park sank two foul shots for DuBois Central before Bennett hit another three. Park scored on a putback with Bennett answering with another three, 13-6. Schenk cut the Dutch lead to 13-8 with a field goal. A foul shot by SMAâ€™s Shajuan Carrero made it 14-8 and a foul shot by Werner made it 15-8. Sette scored for DuBois Central, 15-10. Werner converted a three-point play with five seconds remaining, giving the Dutch the 18-10 first-period lead.
Werner sank a foul shot at the 6:43 mark, then hit a field goal at the 6:25 mark, giving the Dutch the 21-10 lead. Two foul shots by Sette made it 21-12 before Bennett a hit field goal, 23-12, igniting a 12-0 Dutch run. Werner had two points in the run, Quiggle four, Justin Beimel two and Brandon Vollmer two as the Dutch led 33-21 with 2:24 left in the first half. St. Marys led 34-15 a the half.
Johnson scored a two for DCC to open the second half. Sam Guido scored twice for the Dutch and Vollmer added a field goal, 40-17. Oâ€™Connor scored for DCC before the Dutch hit four threes by Bennett, Quiggle, Michael Fox and Quiggle again. Werner added a foul shot and Quiggle a field goal as the Dutch led 55-19 with 2:21 left in the third. DuBois Central cut it to 55-24 before Quiggle scored the last points of the quarter to make it 57-24.
The Cardinals outscored the Dutch 16-8 in the fourth quarter, making the final score 65-40 in favor of the Dutch. Carrerro led the Dutch with three, while Kyle Gaton and Bennett each had two points and Vollmer one.
The Dutchmen are now 3-1 on the season.
Thursday night the Dutch will travel to Coudersport to take on the Falcons. Junior varsity is set for a 6 p.m. start, with varsity to follow at 7:30 p.m.
Friday night the Dutch will host the Clarion Bobcats in a non-league affair.

The Dutch junior varsity squad lost a 45-32 contest to the Cardinals.
DCC took an 11-6 first period lead and outscored St. Marys 13-6 in the second quarter for a 24-12 halftime lead.
The Cardinals outscored the Dutch 13-9 in the fourth quarter. St. Marys outscored DuBois Central 11-8 in the fourth quarter making the final score 45-32 in favor of DCC.
