The St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen basketball team picked up their first win of the season in their home opener on Wednesday evening, defeating the Port Allegany Gators 66-35.
"It was excellent," said St. Marys coach Mark Guido of the winning their home opener. "[I'm] real happy with the effort tonight. I thought our defense really set the tone early. We were able to get Port Allegany out of their rhythm, and I thought that was real important. They got frustrated and tired early."
St. Marys led the entire way. The squad was ahead 13-4 after the first period, 33-10 at the half, and 52-22 after three quarters.
"We got a lot of guys in. It was a good game for some of these players to get experience that they haven't had at the varsity level, so I'm hoping as the season progresses that that benefits us," Guido said.
The Dutchmen were led offensively by senior Justin Quiggle with 17 points on 14 twos and a three-for-five night from the foul line. Brandon Vollmer added 13 points on one three, four twos, and two foul shots.
Still, Guido noted that he was more impressed with the team's defensive effort.
"I'll look at the stats later," Guido said. "To me, it was about our defensive effort. I was really impressed that we were taking charges. We were getting turnovers – a lot of steals – and that kind of lends itself to easy transition baskets and transition opportunities, and that was huge."
The Gators were led by senior Beau Shively with 17 points on eight twos and a foul shot.
The game opened with St. Marys scoring the first six points on a pair of buckets by Quiggle and a bucket by Jimmy Werner. After a bucket by Port, Caleb Bennett hit a three to make it 9-2 at the 3:50 mark of the first period. The Gators added one more bucket, while Vollmer and Werner both scored for St. Marys to give the Dutchmen a 13-4 lead at the end of the first quarter.
A three by Bennett to open the second quarter put the Dutchmen up 16-4. The Gators answered with a bucket of their own before St. Marys went on a nine-point run on a three and a pair of foul shots by Vollmer and buckets by Werner and Quiggle. Port added another two points to make it 25-8 with 3:31 remaining in the half. The Dutchmen added eight more points on a trio of baskets by Quiggle and a basket by Sam Guido before the Gators scored the final points of the half, with St. Marys up 33-10.
Port scored first at the start of the second half to cut St. Marys' lead to 33-12. The Dutchmen then added another nine unanswered points on a trio of foul shots by Quiggle, a pair of buckets by Vollmer and a bucket by Werner to increase their lead to 42-12 with 4:23 remaining in the quarter. Shively converted a foul shot to make it 42-13. Quiggle and Shively then traded buckets before St. Marys added four more points on a bucket by Shajuan Carrero and a pair of foul shots by Michael Fox. The Gators then added a pair of buckets of their own on shots by Charlie Buchanan and Shively. St. Marys would add four more on a pair of foul shots by Phil Danz and a bucket by Werner before a three by Buchanan ended the third quarter with the Dutchmen up 52-22.
Vollmer hit a two to open the fourth quarter. The teams then traded pairs of buckets as Carrero scored twice and Port's Shively and Logan Stuckey each had a basket to make the score 58-26 with 4:26 left to play. Port then scored four more on buckets by Buchanan and Shively. Justin Beimel added two for St. Marys, while Buchanan was one-for-two at the foul line to make it 60-31 in favor of St. Marys with 1:56 left on the clock. Buckets by Beimel and Quinn Cunningham increased the Dutchmen's lead to 64-31. Shively added another two for Port. Carrero scored the final bucket for the Dutchmen with just under a minute remaining and Buchanan sank a pair of foul shots to end the game and give St. Marys the 66-35 victory.
The Dutchmen are now 1-1 on the season. They return to action on Friday when they travel to Clearfield to take on the Bisons in a 7:30 p.m. contest.
