ECC’s Meyer and Housler win D9-AA doubles crown

DuBOIS - Elk County Catholic’s Abby Meyer and Loreal Housler captured the District 9 tennis doubles championship on Tuesday by defeating their teammates, Laira Reuscher and Maria Gismondi, in the finals. The tournament was played at the DuBois Area High School courts.
Housler and Meyer reached the finals by defeating St. Marys Area’s Chelsea Agosti and Aubrey Wiesner 5-7, 6-1, 6-3 in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals they beat Brockway’s Abigail Larson and Cassandra Foradori 6-1, 6-3.
Reuscher and Gismondi reached the finals by defeating Riley Fannin and Taylor Scida of Johnsonburg 6-3, 6-1 in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals they defeated Marta Vega and Mary Rosman of St. Marys Area 6-7 (7-3), 6-1, 7-5.
In the first set of the finals, Reuscher and Gismondi opened a 1-0 lead. Meyer and Housler knotted the set at 1-all. Meyer and Housler came back to even the set at 2-all. They would go on to win the next four points to win the set 6-2.
The second set saw Meyer and Housler take a 1-0 lead. Reuscher and Gismondi tied the set at 1-all before taking a 3-1 lead. Meyer and Housler made the score 3-2. Gismondi and Reuscher opened a 4-2 lead. Meyer and Housler battled back to knot the set at 4-all. With the set tied at 5-all, Reuscher and Gismondi would win the final two points to win the set 7-5 to even the match at one set each.
The third and deciding set saw Reuscher and Gismondi take the 1-0 lead. Meyer and Housler evened the set at 1-all. They would win the next five points to win the set 6-1 to capture the District 9 title.
“We have good doubles teams and we spend a lot of time practicing doubles,” said ECCHS coach Pete Meier.
“These girls don’t give up. They play every shot,” said Meier.
“The two juniors (Gismondi and Reuscher) got a lot of experience today which will pay off in the long run. The two seniors (Meyer and Housler) are both four year letter winners. They will be missed for what they meant to the program. I can’t think of a better way to end their careers,” said the coach.
“I couldn’t be prouder of these kids,” added coach Meier.
The District 9 champions will compete in the PIAA doubles tournament on Nov. 4 and 5 at the Hershey Racquet Club.
The Punxsutawney duo of Anna Monyak and Shaina Reddinger defeated DuBois Area’s Jenny Reese and Alexis DeNapoli 6-4, 6-7 (8-10), 6-3 to win the Class AAA title.

SMA’s Marta Vega and Mary Rosman over Brockway’s Gabrielle Bart and Brittany Johnson, 6-0, 6-2.
Semifinals
Housler and Meyer over Larson and Foradori 6-1, 6-3.
Reuscher and Gismondi over Vega and Rosman, 6-7 (7-3) 6-1, 7-5.
Finals
Housler and Meyer over Reuscher and Gismondi, 6-2, 5-7, 6-1.
