ST. MARYS - It was not the opening to the 2012 season that the Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders varsity girls' soccer team was hoping for. The DuBois Central Catholic Lady Cardinals left Benzinger Park Friday with a 3-0 victory.
Junior Maddie Meyers accounted for all the scoring in the contest. Her first goal came with 29:18 remaining in the first half on a pass from senior Aundrea Snyder. Meyers tallied again just 50 seconds from intermission.
The Lady Cardinals striker got her final score with 15:09 left in the game.
"DuBois Central has a real nice team," said ECC coach Don Fabiano. "They were solid with their skills and overall very quick. That team (DCC) is going to win more than a few games this year."
"We tried a number of different lineup combinations, but just didn't have an answer," he added.
Central carried the play in the first half-- out-shooting ECC 5-2. "I thought that despite being behind 2-0 at the half, we had had some scoring chances in the first 40 minutes and were not out of it," Fabiano said.
ECC came out of halftime and quickly turned the game's momentum in their favor. The Lady Crusaders had a couple of excellent scoring chances in the second half's first 15 minutes but could not capitalize.
The Lady Cardinals finished the game with an 11-6 shots-at-goal advantage and three corners to ECC's one.
The Lady Crusaders (0-1) will return to action Tuesday with a home game against Curwensville at Benzinger Park starting at 4 p.m. The Lady Tide return almost their whole roster from a 2011 team that finished in the top eight of the state playoffs.
"We are going to have to get better-- coaching, playing and injury-wise-- to go up against teams like Curwensville," said Fabiano.
