ECC tennis team blanks Clearfield 9-0

The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader tennis team remained undefeated on the young season with a 9-0 victory over the Clearfield Bison squad Thursday afternoon at the Benzinger and Memorial Park courts.“The weather was nearly perfect for our first home match of the season. Clearfield has a very nice squad. Today they played short-handed, but they played good tennis and it was a nice match to watch,” said ECCHS coach Pete Meier.At first singles, ECC’s Laira Reuscher defeated Yesh Patel 6-0, 6-0.At second singles, Maria Gismondi of Elk Catholic defeated Lauren Whitmer 6-1, 6-0 at second singles.At third singles, Elk’s Kristin Dippold defeated Rayanna Kavelak 6-0, 6-0.Sophie Herzing of the Lady Crusaders beat Abbi Welker 6-0, 6-0 at fourth singles.At fifth singles, Abby Wittman of Elk Catholic defeated Emily Ramsey 6-0, 6-0.At first doubles, ECC’s Marla Scacchitti and Rachel Stauffer defeated Yesh Patel and Rayanna Kavelak 8-3.Elk’s second doubles team of Elizabeth Nicklas and Linnea Stager defeated Lauren Whitmer and Emily Ramsey 8-1.The Elk Catholic third doubles team of Maura Keyes and Natalie Reichard and the fourth doubles team of Danielle Healy and Megan McKenna both won by forfeit.“All of our singles players did well today. We are improving with each match, we’re gaining confidence and we’re having fun. Linnea Stager played her first match of the season, teaming up with Liz Nicklas to win at second doubles,” said Meier. The match of the day saw Rachel Stauffer and Marla Scacchitti play great tennis in winning at first doubles. Rachel and Marla play well together and it was an enjoyable match to watch. “This was our fourth match and I am very proud of how well we’ve played and improved since the beginning of the season. I know I say this a lot, but we have a very nice team. We play good tennis, we have a lot of fun and it’s a pleasure coaching them.”Elk Catholic, now 4-0 on the season, will travel to Brockway Tuesday for a 3:30 p.m. match.
