ECC track teams compete at Igloo Invitational

ALTOONA - Two first places and a meet record by Elk County Catholic senior Megan Dornisch were the headlines as the ECCHS track and field teams competed at the 36th annual Igloo Invitational held in Altoona on Saturday.
The 2010 state champion thrower continued her string of first -place finishes by placing first in the shot put with a meet record 41’ 9” throw. Dornisch also picked up a first place in the discus event with a throw of 127’ 0”.
ECC athletes also picked up other top eight finishes in the field events. In the girls’ shot put, senior thrower Ellie Petrosky placed third in the event with a throw of 33’ 9”. In the high jump, junior Jacob Herbstritt placed fifth in the high jump event, clearing 6’ 0”. Senior Molly Eshbach placed fifth in two events on Saturday. In the long jump, Eshbach jumped a distance of 14’ 11”, while in the triple jump, her distance was 33’1.5”. Junior Jessie Franco finished fifth in the pole vault, clearing a height of 8’6”.
On the track, several ECC athletes also placed at Saturday’s meet. Freshman Kennedy Weisner placed second in two events, the 1600m and the 800m. Kennedy turned in excellent times in both events with a time of 5:08.87 in the 1600m and a time of 2:17.72 in the 800m.
Junior hurdler Abbi Petrosky also placed in two events on Saturday. In the 300m hurdles, Petrosky ran a time of 49.72, placing second. In the 100m hurdles, Petrosky placed third, running the event in a time of 16.78.
Other ECC girls placing at the meet were junior Maggie Sorg and senior Tess Onink. Sorg placed fourth in the 3200m, running the event in a time of 12:31.00. In the 400m, Onink placed eighth with a time of 1:06.55.
Two ECC boys placed in individual events at the meet. Senior Jared Schaut placed fifth in the 300m hurdles, running the event in a time of 42.79. Senior Dan Steudler placed sixth in the 400m event, finishing with a time of 53.38.
Also for the boys, two relays placed fourth at the meet. The boys’ 4 x 800m team of Dan Steudler, Joe Hoffman, Ryan Detsch and Jared Schaut finished fourth with a time of 8:45.25. The boys’ 4 x 400m relay team also finished fourth. The team of Dan Steudler, Jared Schaut, Andrew Wolfe and Ryan Detsch ran the race in a time of 3:43.18.
“All in all, it was a good day for the team,” noted ECC coach John Schneider. “There were some outstanding individual performances and relay times turned in today, given the day. The cold temperatures and off-and-on wind did provide for some challenging conditions, but overall we seemed to handle it well. We have had two solid meets this week and with continued hard work, I am confident we can continue to improve.”
ECC travels to DuBois for a meet on Tuesday.
