The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader volleyball team raised their record to 8-1 on the season with a 3-0 victory over the DuBois Area Lady Beavers Tuesday night at the ECCHS gym.
The Lady Crusaders won the first set by a 25-20 margin. They took the second set 25-19 and won the third set by a 25-18 score to win the match 3-0.
In the first set the score went back and forth. Elk Catholic got the serve back trailing 5-3. With Carli Schneider serving, ECC went up 8-3 on a block by Taylor DaCanal and Anna VanEerden. The Lady Crusaders would maintain the five-point lead for most of the set. With Kirstie Wehler serving, ECC went up 17-9 on a block by Schneider. DuBois got the serve back trailing 18-11. The Lady Beavers closed the gap to 18-16. ECC got the serve back leading 19-16. With Schneider serving, ECC made it 20-16. Schneider recorded two aces and DuBois hit the ball long, 23-16. DuBois got the serve back off a block by Elk, 23-17. A kill by Taylor DaCanal made the score 24-19. A long serve by ECC made it 24-20. A kill by Taylor DaCanal went off the DuBois defenders to make the final score 25-20.
The second set went back and forth. With the score tied at 16, ECC got the serve back. With Marissa Cunningham serving, Elk went up 17-16. She recorded two aces to make it 19-16. DuBois got the serve back and knotted the score at 19-all. A kill by ECCâ€™s Jessie Ginther made the score 20-19. With Taylor DaCanal serving, Schneider got a block, Sophia Yanak a kill and DaCanal recorded an ace. Schneider got a block to make the score 25-19.
The third set saw Elk open a 5-2 lead. DuBois would battle back to cut Elkâ€™s lead to 8-9. A kill by VanEerden knotted the score at 9-all. The Lady Crusaders gradually increased their lead to 17-12, getting the serve back. A block by Schneider made it 18-12. Sydnie Stauffer recorded a kill before Elk was called for a carry, 19-13. ECC got the serve back at 20-13. A kill by Stauffer and one by Schneider made it 22-13 before DuBois got the serve back. The teams traded sideouts. A block by Taylor DaCanal and Stauffer gave ECC the serve back leading 24-18. An ace by Hayley DaCanal gave Elk the 25-18 win.
Carli Schneider led ECC with seven service points and six blocks. Marissa Cunningham had six service points while Taylor DaCanal had five.
â€śI think we played sloppy but we controlled the match. We adjusted to what they had to offer but we kept the pressure on them,â€ť said ECCHS coach Diane Gies.
â€śWeâ€™re looking forward to going to Bradford Thursday and avenge our only loss of the season. We have to continue to get better and stay healthy,â€ť added Gies.
The ECC junior varsity squad won in two.
The Lady Crusaders return to action Thursday when they travel to Bradford. The junior varsity match starts at 6 p.m. with the varsity to follow.
