Edith "Pete" M. Werner Knoll

Edith "Pete" M. Werner Knoll, 91, died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2011 at Rochester General Hospital in Rochester, N.Y. after a brief illness.
She was born in St. Marys on Jan. 3, 1920, a daughter of the late Arthur A. and Edith Mary Kaul Werner.
She married Edmund "Lee" Mellitus Knoll on July 4, 1946. He preceded her in death.
She attended St. Mary's Catholic Grade School and graduated in 1937 from St. Mary's Catholic High School. She was a 1940 Distinguished Awards Graduate from Saint Vincent School of Nursing in Erie. She then worked at Kaul Memorial Hospital in St. Marys and was a Nursing Supervisor when she entered the Navy. She was commissioned into the U.S. Navy and attained the rank of Lt. JG as she served in the Navy Nurse Corp. at the Naval Hospitals in Portsmouth, Va. and Corvallis, Ore. from January 1944 through June 1946 during World War II.
She devoted her life to her husband and their children, lived her faith, and nurtured her family with her beliefs and values. She was the quintessential grandmother to her 29 grandchildren, always generous with her time, attention and "Gramma treats."
She was an energetic member of the PTO at St. Joseph Grade School, Villa Maria Academy and Cathedral Preparatory School. She also served for many years at the voting booth in her district in South Erie. A lifelong member of St. Joseph Church/Bread of Life Community, she was an active member and leader of CFM and Senior Youth Group. She enjoyed gardening, a good game of Scrabble, and spending time with her grandchildren and at her cottage in Shorehaven on the Lake in Ripley, N.Y.
She is survived by seven children, Carol A. Triplett of Perkasie, Edith M. Blabac and her husband Stephen of Port Crane, N.Y., Mary Lee Hudson and her husband Thomas of Erie, Virginia M. Steenberge and her husband Gerald of Pittsford, N.Y., Dr. Susan J. Vlachos and her husband Dr. Darell of Farmington Hills, Mich., and Patrick M. Knoll and his wife Michele of East Amherst, N.Y.; a daughter-in-law, Arlene Knoll of Erie; 29 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three sisters, Virginia "Budge" Leopold of Winterpark, Fla., Marjorie Conrad of St. Marys and Thecla Coppolo of St. Marys; and by a number of nieces, nephews and other family members.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Christopher Mark Knoll; a granddaughter, Aileen Steenberge; a brother, Arthur Werner; and by two sisters, Rita Werner and Helen Fritz.
A Funeral Mass for Edith "Pete" M. Werner Knoll will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Church/Bread of Life Community, 147 West 24th St., Erie, PA 16502.
Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Francis V. Kloecker Funeral Home, Inc., 2502 Sassafras St., Erie, PA 16502 on Tuesday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m., and are invited to attend a prayer service there on Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. prior to the service.
