Elk County Fair kicks off

The 2011 Elk County Fair kicked off Wednesday evening with the Opening Ceremonies, which were attended by State Rep. Matt Gabler (R-Elk/Clearfield), the Elk County Commissioners, various township supervisors and fair board personnel and volunteers.
Next was the crowning of the Elk County Fair queen, junior queen and princess. This year, there were 10 princess candidates, 15 junior queen candidates and five queen candidates. Shelby Zomcik, 18, of Kersey, was crowned the 2011 Elk County Fair Queen, while Nicole Holland, 13, of St. Marys, was named the junior queen, and Makenzie Gillen, 10, of Kersey, was awarded the princess title. Runners-up were: Queen - Mary Rossman, 16, of Weedville; junior queen - Elle McGowan, 13, of St. Marys; and princess - Carissa Vavala, 10, of St. Marys.
The Elk County Fair began Tuesday and ends on Saturday. It opens at 4 p.m. daily and is being held at the fairgrounds in Fox Township.
