Long-planned renovations at Elk Haven Nursing Home are all but complete, with just a few finishing touches remaining.
"The facility recently underwent an extensive renovation that began in August 2010. The renovations were designed to provide comfort, safety and a home-like atmosphere for our residents," said Tom Davido, administrator at Elk Haven.
The 120-bed facility, located along the Johnsonburg Road in St. Marys, provides long-term skilled nursing care and short-term rehabilitation to area residents. While other renovation projects have taken place in the past since Elk Haven was established in 1975, this was the first full-scale renovation to the facility.
"This is the first total renovation of all resident areas. We wanted to modernize the building," said Nancy Votano, director of nursing at Elk Haven.
All of the resident rooms and common areas were fully renovated, including new furnishings, flooring, ceilings, window treatments and artwork. Each resident now has a new 22-inch, wall-mounted flat-screen TV, and a new emergency call system was also implemented.
"The newly renovated shower rooms, lounge areas, dining room and nurse's stations add additional comfort and beauty to the facility," Davido said.
Votano said feedback on the project has been positive.
"Families love it. They're very pleased," she said. "It still has the 'homey' feel, yet it now has a more elegant touch. It makes the residents' living environment much more pleasant."
"Family and visitors are very impressed with the designs and amenities that were a part of this project. We are always receiving many positive comments on the overall appearance and comfort of the facility," Davido said.
