We all know someone who has been affected by breast cancer; according to the American Cancer Society (ACS), one in six women is diagnosed with breast cancer annually. The ACS also estimates that more than 10,500 women in Pennsylvania will receive a diagnosis of breast cancer by the end of the year.
In order to help educate the community about breast cancer and provide inspiration to area women and their families, Elk Regional Health Center is hosting "Pink Palooza." The event will be held Thursday, Sept. 22 at 6 p.m. at The Red Fern in Fox Township.
Charlotte Floravit, ERHC's public relations director, will emcee the evening, during which a panel of experts will be available to answer attendee's questions about breast cancer and other women's health issues. The panel will consist of general surgeons Dr. Adrienne Fueg, Dr. K.C. Joseph and Dr. Narayana Subramany; obstetrical and gynecological specialists Dr. Steven Koch, Dr. Marc Landsberg and Dr. Wu Jan Lin; Dr. David Obley, a radiologist; Paulette Schreiber, a Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner who specializes in women’s health; and Julie Szymanski, a Certified Nurse Midwife. Floravit said questions may be submitted when people call or stop in at ERHC's public relations offices to RSVP for the event or they may be asked during the question-and-answer session that evening. She said index cards will also be provided for those who have a question but do not want to ask it aloud.
“We encourage women to attend 'Pink Palooza,'" Floravit said. “It’s a great way for women to get answers to questions they may be too shy to ask and raise awareness about women’s health issues.”
The evening will also feature a video of physicians, employees and volunteers throughout Elk Regional Health System (ERHS) dancing while wearing pink examination gloves. The gloves are worn during the "Pink Glove Dance" to raise awareness of breast cancer. According to Floravit, the dance was established at Providence St. Vincent Health Center in Portland, Ore. and has become a national phenomenon, with healthcare employees across the country performing the dance and submitting their videos to the official Pink Glove Dance website at http://pinkglovedance.com.
Floravit said Elk Regional’s “Celebrating Women” video will also be shown. The video is the culmination of the Celebrating Women Campaign conducted in conjunction with the opening of the Women’s Imaging Center. For the Celebrating Women Campaign, women throughout the region whose stories inspired others were nominated to be part of a professional photography shoot.
Floravit said their photographs will be hung on a "Wall of Honor" in the Women’s Imaging Center at Elk Regional to help inspire other women who visit to the center for healthcare services.
Hors d'oeuvres will be provided by Mammotome, a company specializing in equipment to perform minimally invasive breast surgery, and door prizes will also be distributed. Anyone interested in coming to the event is asked to RSVP by calling 788-8832.
