Elk Regional Health Center celebrated the opening of its new state-of-the-art Women's Imaging Center during an open house held Thursday afternoon.
An assortment of services is offered inside the suite, including digital mammography, stereotactic breast biopsy, ultrasound and DEXA highly accurate painless bone density scans.
The suite is conveniently located on the ground floor of the hospital, situated a short distance from the main entrance next to the emergency room where the former pain clinic was housed. Its location allows for patients to have easy access to a multidisciplinary team of specialists should the need arise.
With easy check-in and minimal wait time, the center's hours are designed to accommodate the busy schedules of today's working women. Staff go one step further by sending reminders to patients about scheduling their annual mammogram.
"We're very proud to unveil our new Women's Imaging Center," said Elk Regional Health System president and CEO Gregory P. Bauer. "It was driven by a need to make women's imaging services as convenient as possible. If obtaining preventative care is a hassle, people won't do it - and that's a decision that could have very negative implications. We wanted to give women throughout the region a convenient way to access the diagnostic imaging services that could save their lives."
Upon entering the suite, patients encounter a lobby area as well as four spacious exam rooms, all of which are painted in soothing neutral tones complete with inspirational quotes painted on the walls. Hardwood floors and tiling complete the spa-like atmosphere inside the suite. There is also a large restroom area complete with a small lounge inside of it featuring a small couch, television and various educational materials.
Lisa Housler, director of radiology, noted all of the work on the suite as well as its contents were purchased from and completed by local businesses.
"We know how important a private and peaceful environment is to our patients who come for diagnostic imaging," Housler said. "We've created a unique, low-stress environment to help ease the fears women can experience when they come in for their screenings. These tests help us screen and detect diseases such as breast cancer and osteoporosis."
The center is staffed by five medical professionals who work to make the patient's experience as emotionally supportive as possible.
