The St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen celebrated Senior Players Night by recording a 52-47 victory over the visiting Punxsutawney Chucks in a District Nine League game held at the Dutch Oven at St. Marys Area High School.
"This was a big win for us, especially coming off the tough loss on Monday night at Bradford," said Coach Mark Guido of the Flying Dutch. "We wanted this to be a special night for our seniors, as they were honored in the pre-game ceremony, then came out and played a great ball game.
"Overall, I was very pleased with our performance tonight, but we have to improve at the foul line. We missed too many foul shots ( 3 for 12) in that final period, a problem that has plagued us most of the year," said Guido. "I started five seniors tonight and was very happy with the way they played. They staked us to an early lead and led us to the victory.
"Justin Quiggle came up with a couple of big buckets for us in the final period and also came up with some big assists. Quiggle is our season-long leader in assists and steals."
Dylan Reigel led the Dutchmen in scoring on Tuesday with 15 points on four field goals, two treys and a one-for-two night at the line. Justin Quiggle was next with 11 points on two field goals, two treys and a foul goal. Jordan Weinzierl and Jimmy Werner were next with six points each, followed by Ryan Mancuso and Rocco Harshbarger with five each, and Bobby Vollmer and Ryan Uhl with two each.
Uhl led the Dutchmen in the rebounding department with eight, which is his season average.
The Chucks were led by Daniel Triponey with 22 points on three field goals, four treys and a four-for-four night at the foul line. He was followed by Logan Weaver with 17 points on seven field goals and a trey. Darren Pifer was next with four points, followed by Jordan Mesoraco and Alex Fedigan with two points each.
Weaver opened the scoring in the game with a field goal to give the Chucks a short-lived 2-0 lead. Reigel and Harshbarger each hit a trey for the Dutch, with Reigel then adding a field goal to give the Dutchmen a 8-2 lead. A Triponey field goal was followed by fielders by Reigel and Uhl to make it 12-4. Triponey and Mancuso then traded foul goals to make it 14-6. Weaver and Quiggle traded treys, then Weaver scored at the buzzer to make it 17-11 in favor of the Dutch.
Mancuso turned a three-point play to open the second quarter and Vollmer added a field goal to give the Dutch a 22-11 lead. Punxsutawney then ran off eight straight points to cut the lead to 22-19. Quiggle and Weaver traded field goals to make it 24-21. Harshbarger scored for the Dutch, then Weaver hit for the Chucks, but Weinzierl answered for the Dutch to give St. Marys a 28-23 halftime lead.
Pifer cut the lead to 28-25 to start the second half, but Werner then scored a field goal and three straight foul goals to put the Dutch in front by nine, 33-25. A Mesoraco bucket was answered by field goals by Reigel and Weinzierl, 37-27. Weaver and Weinzierl exchanged field goals to end the third quarter scoring, with the Dutchmen in front 39-29.
Triponey opened the final period with a field goal for Punxsy, but Quiggle answered with a trey, 42-31. Triponey hit two straight treys, 42-37. Reigel scored for the Dutch, but Triponey hit another trey to make it 44-40. Reigel hit a trey and Werner a foul goal to push the lead to 48-40. A Weaver field goal and another Triponey trey cut the lead to 48-45. Quiggle scored on a layup to make it 50-45. In the closing minute, the Dutchmen added two foul goals, while Punxsy added a field goal to make the final score St. Marys 52, Punxsutawney 47.
