The St. Marys Area Flying Dutchmen picked up their ninth victory of the season on Tuesday evening as they defeated the Punxsutawney Chucks by a 52-45 score in a District Nine League encounter at the Punxsutawney Area High School gym.
The Dutchmen fell behind in the first quarter of play, but came on strong in the second quarter to take the lead at the half. They held the lead at the end of three by two points, then outscored the Chucks 15-10 in the final stanza to win the game by seven points.
Justin Quiggle led the Dutchmen in the scoring column on Tuesday with 19 points on seven field goals, a trey and a two-for-two night at the foul line. Ryan Uhl was next for the Dutchmen with 14 points, all coming on field goals. Jimmy Werner was also in double figures, finishing the night with 11 points on five field goals and a foul goal. Other Dutchmen reaching the scoring column were Ryan Mancuso with four points, and Dylan Reigel and Jordan Weinzierl with two points each.
The Punxsutawney squad was led in scoring by Logan Weaver with 16 points on three field goals, two treys and a four-for-four night at the charity line. Daniel Triponey also hit in double figures, with 10 points on three field goals, a trey and a foul goal. Also scoring for the Punxsutawney Chucks were Jordan Mesoraco with eight, Darren Pifer and Alex Fedigan with five each and Corban Cressley with one point.
The Punxsutawney Chucks grabbed the first-quarter lead as they were able to outscore the Dutchmen 10-8 in the first eight minutes of playing time.
The Dutchmen came back in the second period to put 16 points on their side of the slate while holding the Chucks to 10 points to take a 24-20 lead into the locker room at the half.
Following the halftime break, the teams exchanged buckets in the third quarter, with the Chucks finally outscoring the Dutchmen by two points, 15-13, to make the score St. Marys 37, Punxsutawney 35 with eight minutes left to play in the game.
St. Marys controlled the tempo in the final period. They were able to extend their lead as the quarter went on, eventually winning the game by seven points, as they outscored the Chucks 15-10 to win by a final score of 52-45.
St. Marys is now 9-3 overall on the season and 4-1 in District Nine League play.
The Dutchmen will return to action on Thursday night when they will travel to DuBois to take on the DuBois Central Catholic Cardinals in a non-league affair. The J.V. game is slated for 6 p.m. with the varsity to follow at 7:30 p.m.
St. Marys outscored the Chucks 48 to 36 from the field last evening. Punxsy was 9 for 12 from the foul line, while the Dutch were 4 for 11.

Dutch JVs win
The St. Marys Area JVs held on to pull out a very close 52-51 victory over the Punxsutawney junior varsity squad in the preliminary game.
The Chucks took a 10-9 first-period lead, with the Dutchmen coming back in the second period to outscore the Chucks 14-10 to take a 22-20 halftime lead.
The Chucks outscored the Dutchmen 18-16 in the third period to knot the game up at 38-all going into the final stanza. In the fourth quarter, the Dutchmen outscored Punxsutawney 14-13 to win the game by a 52-51 score.
