A new sense of school pride and a stepped up commitment from students to St. Marys Area High School is one of the highlights fostered from the school's participation in the USA TODAY High School Sports' Best Mascot contest.
While only in their first year of the contest the Flying Dutchmen claimed second place in the nation with 115,951 votes.
The school will receive a $1,000 cash prize and a contest banner.
"It seems fitting to use that money towards the purchase of a new mascot costume," said Adam Brooks, SMAHS teacher and contest coordinator.
