September 12, 2012

ST. MARYS - The St. Marys City Police report that former Elk County Humane Society treasurer and financial advisor Richard A. Danz was taken into custody on Wednesday, Sept. 12 in North Carolina.
Criminal charges have been filed against Danz, 47, of 376 Walnut St., St. Marys, in connection with the alleged theft of funds through his position with the organization, as well as charges alleging he defrauded clients of investments made through his private tax preparation business.
According to police, Danz was apprehended Wednesday by the Matthews Police Department in Matthews, N.C. and is currently being held there pending extradition to Pennsylvania, where he faces various felony charges of theft by failure to make required disposition of funds, theft of services, theft by unlawful taking or disposition, and theft by deception.
A police investigation was initiated on June 22, 2012, after ECHS board members filed a compliant against Danz alleging the theft of over $500,000 in funds from the society, where Danz was employed as treasurer and accountant/financial advisor beginning on Sept. 9, 2008. According to affidavits, in the course of contacting the Pa. Securities and Exchange Commission and Pa. State Board of Accountancy as part of the investigation into Danz, authorities learned that Danz was not a Certified Public Accountant in Pennsylvania and his company, Brock Tax and Financial, was also not certified with the state.
