The myth of motorcycles in movies, books and songs seems to embody the idea of youth, rebelliousness, recklessness and a wild spirit. James Dean in “Rebel Without a Cause,” "Leader of the Pack,” “Unknown Legend,” the famous duo of the counterculture movie “Easy Rider,” Evil Knievel, the Hell’s Angels, “Ghost Rider -- even Steve McQueen speeding across the countryside in “The Great Escape-- all of those stories and images make some people yearn for the always-exciting and sometimes dangerous lure of the open road and a powerful engine.
All of the myths and stereotypes about bikers aside, however, safety is of premier concern for motorcyclists these days, as someone who knows a great deal about the issue will tell you. Mike Meyer, the Elk County representative, road officer and membership captain for A.B.A.T.E. (American Bikers Aimed Toward Education) of Pa.’s Endless Mountains Chapter 34, said while the aim of motorcyclists is to have fun and enjoy the experience, his group stresses safety at all times and is dedicated to improving road safety for both riders and motorists.
