French Creek Valley hands Wilcox first loss of Region 8

The Wilcox Legion baseball team is in today’s championship contest despite losing by an 11-6 score to French Creek Valley in the nightcap of the Region 8 Tournament Tuesday at Berwind Park.Today’s schedule will see French Creek Valley taking on Albion at 1 p.m., with the loser being eliminated. The winner of that game will take on Wilcox for the Region 8 title in a game scheduled for a 4 p.m. start.In last night’s nightcap, Wilcox outhit the French Creek squad 13-12. Cole Peterson had a triple and a single, while Joe Holmberg, Quinn Luhr and Frank Kocjancic each had two singles. CJ Herbstritt doubled. Jesse Reynolds, Taylor Feronti, Josh Mitchell and Kyle Sheldon all singled.Tyler Walters led French Creek with two doubles. Kyle Wise had a double and a single, and AJ Thompson and Adam Bronson each had two singles. Kyle McCray, Luke Carter, Ryan Paden and Hunter Johnston each singled.Jesse Reynolds started on the mound for Wilcox and worked 4 2/3 innings, giving up five hits, walking three and striking out four. Mitchell Holmberg worked 4 1/3 innings, giving up seven hits, walking four and striking out four.Luke Carter went eight innings for French Creek, giving up 12 hits, walking four and striking out six. Tyler Williams worked one inning, giving up one hit and striking out three.After a scoreless first inning, Wilcox scored a run in the home half of the second inning. The third inning was scoreless, with both teams scoring a run in the fourth inning as Wilcox led 2-1.French Creek Valley erupted for five runs on four hits and three errors for a 6-2 lead. French Creek added three runs in the sixth inning to open a 9-2 lead as Wilcox failed to score in the home half of the inning.French Creek did not score in the seventh, with Wilcox picking up two runs to make the score 9-4. Each team scored two eight-inning runs as French Creek Valley led 11-6 going into the ninth inning.French Creek Valley left the bases loaded in the top half of the ninth inning. Wilcox left a man stranded as French Creek recorded the 11-6 victory.The winner of today’s championship game advances to the state tournament, which is scheduled for July 31 to Aug. 4 in Boyertown.
