On May 26 at Shippensburg University's Seth Grove Stadium, St. Marys Area High School's Adair Gennocro joined the ranks of the PIAA state champions as she claimed her first career title in the PIAA Class-AA girls' 3200-meter run.
Gennocro, who will begin her senior year at SMAHS in the fall, recently reflected upon the race and what it is like being a state champion. She is the first SMAHS athlete to win a state championship in track and field. Her photo will eventually hang in the foyer of the school along with that of Jeff Foster, who won a state championship in cross country in 1973.
Headed into the race, she was seeded second behind District III's Meredith Speakman. Speakman recorded a qualifying time of 11:01.57, while Gennocro had a time of 11:13.99. The third- and fourth-seeded qualifiers were Madeline Schmiedeknecht and Elizabeth McDonald, who had times of 11:17.25 and 11:17.64, respectively.
