Helen L. Shields

Helen L. Shields, 94, of Summerville, died Tuesday, March 29, 2011 at the Jefferson Manor of Brookville.
She was born Aug. 16, 1916 in Brookville, the daughter of the late Arthur C. DeMotte and Gertrude Carberry DeMotte.
At the Baptist Church in Brookville, she married Blair E. Shields, who preceded her in death
She was a graduate of Brookville High School in Brookville. She was employed at Demans in Brookville for 38 years, were she was a buyer and manager of the gift shop until the age of 83. She was a member of the Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church, Library Club, Summerville Homemakers Club, Ladies Home Mission at Mt. Pleasant, and a 4-H Leader (dairy and sewing).
She is survived by a son, James B. and Cathy Shields of Summerville; an adopted son, Butch E. and Patricia Preston of St. Marys; three daughters, Barb A. Donahue of Summerville, Nancy L. and Robert Laudone of Bradford, R.I., and Rebecca L. and Herbert Pennington III of Troy; a brother, John W. and Esther DeMotte of Brookville; 15 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Cuffy, Paul and Bill, and three sisters, Anna, Virginia and Mary.
Funeral services for Helen L. Shields will be held at 11 a.m. today at the Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Roger P. Howard officiating.
Interment will be at the St. Johns Windy Hill Cemetery, Clover Township, Jefferson County.
Family and friends were received Thursday at the Furlong Funeral Home, Gregory K. Furlong FD, corner of Broad Street and First Avenue, Summerville.
The family suggests memorials be made to the Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church.
