Historic Bean Bake dinner taking place Thursday

February 12, 2011

The Johnsonburg Community Center (JCC) will play host to the fifth annual Bean Bake, scheduled for Thursday from 4 to 6 p.m.
The all-you-can-eat buffet dinner consists of homemade baked beans, a choice of two potato salads - hot German and cold potato salad - applesauce, bread-and-butter pickles, cornbread and molasses spice cake with cream. Coffee, tea, milk, lemonade and ice water will also be served.
Organizers Christine Bressler, JCC recreational director, and Stephanie Distler, owner of Flemish House Art Gallery and studio, located inside the JCC, teamed up in sponsoring the event.
The event is consistently held the third Thursday in February and features historic displays, re-enactors and entertainment.
"I fell in love with the idea of having this event in Johnsonburg once again and started the process in making it happen at our beloved Johnsonburg Community Center," Distler said. "The JCC has continued to be the center of life for the town since 1920."
Tickets to the event are $7, with proceeds going toward the JCC's restoration project, which includes repairs to the swimming pool, ballroom, gymnasium, billiard room and other necessary projects. Reservations for large groups are requested.
In addition, cash chances will be sold, with proceeds benefiting a local organization. Last year's proceeds went to Johnsonburg's Bicentennial Committee.
Among the activities planned for the event are guest speaker and Elk County Commissioner Dan Freeburg; a display of homefront items, including food, clothing and other items by local historian Georgeanne Freeburg; an appearance by Virginia Thorwart on behalf of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and local Civil War re-enactors Dennis Murray, his wife, and another local family showcasing an infantry display.
