The Elk County Historical Society held its 47th annual dinner Friday night at The Royal Inn in memory of Alice Wessman-Saline, a charter member of the organization.
The dinner began with an invocation by pastor Craig Duffield of the Evangelical Covenant Church.
Guests were welcomed by society director Mary Kalinowski.
Wessman-Saline was born in Ridgway on Christmas Day in 1924. She was a graduate of the Ridgway High School and the DuBois Business College.
Wessman-Saline was an avid scholar of American history, particularly the history of Ridgway and Elk County. She had considerable experience in the field of historical publications in addition to being the editor of "The Elk Horn" for eight years; she also was co-editor and compiler of "A Sesquicentennial History of Ridgway"; principal author-historian, editor and compiler of "A History of Elk County" and "A History of Johnsonburg"; author of "Ridgway, Our Town", a historical coloring book; and was the author of historical articles for the "The Covenant Companion", an official publication of the Evangelical Covenant Church of America.
“She did love history,” Duffield said. “In fact, shortly after I moved to Ridgway at the end of June in 1997, the first two books I read were "A History of Elk County" and "A History of Ridgway" that Alice had worked.
