The annual Elk County Holiday Basketball Tournament, featuring the girls' and boys' varsity basketball squads from St. Marys Area High School, Elk County Catholic High School, Johnsonburg Area High School and Ridgway Area High School, kicks off this afternoon at the SMAHS gymnasium, and will once again feature a variety of fundraisers for the Coaches vs. Cancer program.
According to Roben Daghir, volunteer survivor for outreach and awareness, there will once again be a Coaches vs. Cancer table located in the foyer near the main entrance to the gymnasium.
Continuing one of last year’s successful fundraisers, attendees will once again have the chance to win an autographed basketball if they make a donation to Coaches vs. Cancer. Two basketballs will be given away – one signed by all of the members of all four boys' varsity basketball teams and another signed by all of the members of the girls' varsity squads.
“The signed basketballs are a wonderful novelty and very much a treasure for fans who love our local high school basketball programs,” Daghir said. “The spirit of competition makes the event so exciting. This year will truly be a great event with all four teams prepped and eager to compete.”
New this year, fans will also have the chance to make a donation in support of a specific coach. Boys' coaches are Mark Guido, Aaron Straub, Bill Shuey, and Anthony Allegretto. Girls' coaches are Leona Hoohuli, Ken Pistner, Mike Zilkofski, and Glenn Schauer.
