Is it safe to cross the street?

October 14, 2010

It's nice to be back in St. Marys after having moved away for a number of years. As the new editor of The Daily Press, I am beginning to get re-acclimated to the area. I'm seeing many familiar faces and meeting many new ones, and I'm learning where people go to shop, eat and play. It's been fun driving around town to see some of the changes that have taken place, as well as experiencing the comforting feeling that some things have stayed the same.
What hasn't been very fun, however, is crossing Brusselles Street to get from the parking lot by Elk County Ammo and Arms over to The Daily Press building every day. It can be quite the nerve-racking experience because a lot of people drive by much faster than the posted speed limit. While many people do stop to let you cross, there are just as many who fly through that particular stretch of road.
While that part of Brusselles Street happens to have a crosswalk for pedestrians, other roads do not. So what streets in the area do you feel nervous about your kids crossing? Where are the dangerous intersections for pedestrians? Who has almost gotten mowed down while going across the road to the mailbox? I'll bet some people who live on Main Street in Kersey or in Bennetts Valley will have something to say on this topic.

I feel safer riding my bicycle through rush hour traffic in Times Square than I do around the traffic circle in Saint Marys in the early afternoon.

I live on North Michael Street and pnoned the police about the issue of speeding in that area. It seems that people on their way to the park can not get there fast enough. Keep in mind you have your family in the car and there are families that live there. North Michael and many others in town are posted 25 MPH or less....however I watch people clearly going much much faster.

Maybe it is lack of enforcement? It seems the only drivers that allow pedestrians to cross the street are truck drivers because they think if they dont, they will get cited if they are caught. There are some courtesy drivers around though, but not many because they know nothing will happen to them. Just one person's opinion.

Throughout most of St. Marys it is quite dangerous to cross streets. We live in the Memorial Park area and have noticed that not only do people not observe the 15 mph speed limit, they also tend to exceed it by 15 to 30 mph. Also, Lynch Road is an accident waiting to happen. There are several school bus stops along Lynch, and yet people come flying up and down like they're in a bad episode of Cops. And let's not forget the poor elderly lady who was killed on Center St. after trying to cross the street following Mass. There is such a movement toward a healthier lifestyle with the Marienstadt Wanderers group forming, the recent Wellness festivals and the advent of Rails-To-Trails, one would think that the City would take a greater interest in making our streets safer for walking and bike riding.
