Jay Twp. approves CENTAX replacement

August 20, 2012

Photo by Becky Polaski - Dave Berteri, Jay Township's delegate with the Elk County Tax Collection Committee spoke before the township's board of supervisors at their recent meeting regrading the county's decision to terminate its contract with tax collection agency CENTAX and appoint a replacement.

In the wake of the Elk County Tax Collection Commission voting to appoint a replacement for the county's earned income tax (EIT) collector CENTAX, the county's municipalities must now decide whether to also appoint the firm chosen by the committee to take over the local services tax (LST) collections also performed by CENTAX prior to its termination.
CENTAX was terminated due to what local officials said was a failure to efficiently process tax returns and distribute EIT monies to local municipalities. Dave Berteri, Jay Township's delegate on the Elk County Tax Collection Committee, was on hand at Thursday's meeting of the township's board of supervisors. He said that while the decision to terminate CENTAX had been unanimous, his was the only "nay" vote in the committee's decision to name Berkheimer Associates as Elk County's EIT collector.
