Jay Twp. officials seek leverage in Shale activity
The Jay Township Board of Supervisors, in an effort to exert control over Marcellus Shale activity occurring within the municipality, have found themselves bound in their attempts by bureaucratic red tape. Concerns have been mounting in Jay Twp. regarding the limiting of local governing of Shale activity, and township officials have repeatedly sought ways to maintain any shred of influence over industry operations within their jurisdiction. Unsecured explosives used in the seismic testing process being stored in the Spring Run area of the township was one of the concerns discussed at last month's meeting of the board, with Supervisor Fran Gustafson saying he would contact the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) in determining what recourse, if any, the township had in addressing what officials consider to be a potentially dangerous situation.
