John A. Ferragine, 99, of 231 Powers Ave., Johnsonburg, died Friday, June 15, 2012 in the evening at Elk Regional Health Center in St. Marys following a brief illness.
He was born March 28, 1913 in Catanzaro, Italy, son of the late Domonic and Mary Magra Ferragine. He married Mary C. Notarianni on Nov. 22, 1941 in Holy Rosary Church, Johnsonburg; she preceded him in death on Jan. 29, 1994.
He resided in Johnsonburg for most of his life. He was a 1933 graduate of Johnsonburg High School.
He was a member of the Holy Rosary Church, Johnsonburg Senior Center, Prince of Piedmont Club and Johnsonburg-Wilcox Servicemen's Detail.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving overseas as a Tech 5 with the 351st Ordnance Maintenance Company AA, where he received the American Campaign, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with three Bronze Star Medals, World War II Victory Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.
He was employed by Stackpole Carbon Co. for 28 years, retiring in 1978. He had also worked for Thorco-Canada Dry Bottling Company for five years and for Elliot Company in Ridgway for a short time.
He is survived by two sons, Dennis J. Ferragine and his wife Jane of Johnsonburg, and Robert A. Ferragine and his wife Carol of Erie and Florida; one daughter, Cynthia A. "Cindy" Anstrom of Ridgway; five grandchildren, Kelly Shaw, Brandie Wallace, Kevin and Kyle Anstrom and Michael Embrosia; three great-grandchildren, Hobie and Drake Shaw and Cassady Wallace; one sister, Rose Franco of Johnsonburg; three brothers, James Ferragine and his wife Lucy, Elmer Ferragine and his wife Renelda and Rudolph "Rudy" Ferragine and his wife Joan, all of Johnsonburg; and many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Barbara Monardo; one brother, Arthur Ferragine; and two sisters, Angeline Matzko and Helen DeJulio.
A Mass of Christian Burial for John A. Ferragine will be conducted at Holy Rosary Church on Wednesday, June 20, 2012 at 10 a.m. Officiating will be the Rev. David J. Wilson, pastor. Interment will be held at Holy Rosary Cemetery in Johnsonburg.
Friends will be received at the Anthony F. Ferragine Funeral Home, 401 Chestnut St., Johnsonburg, on Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.
Military Honors will be accorded by the Johnsonburg-Wilcox Servicemen's Detail. Detail members are asked to assemble at the funeral home Wednesday morning at 9:15 a.m.
