The Johnsonburg Rams advanced to todayâ€™s championship game of the Elk County Baseball Tournament with a 15-5, six-inning victory over the Ridgway Elkers Friday afternoon at Berwind Park.
The Rams play St. Marys Area, this morning at 10 a.m. for the 2012 crown. The Dutch defeated the Elk County Catholic Crusaders 10-6 Friday in the late game. The Elkers will meet the Crusaders in the consolation game, which is slated for a noon start.
The Rams were able to put runs on the board in five of the six innings played. They scored one in the first, three in the second, two in the third, four in the fourth and five in the six for their 15 runs. Ridgway scored three runs in the fourth, one in the fifth and one in the sixth.
The game also featured a 30-minute weather delay in the top half of the sixth inning.
Cole Peterson started on the mound for Johnsonburg and worked three innings, giving up two hits, walking two and striking out three. Mitchell Holmberg worked two innings, giving up four hits, walking one and striking out two. Quinn Luhr worked one inning of relief, giving up one hit, walking one and striking out two.
Jesse Reynolds started on the mound for Ridgway. He worked four innings, giving up 14 hits, walking one and striking out four. Josh Roselli worked 1 2/3 innings, giving up two hits, walking three and striking out one.
The Rams had 16 hits in the contest. Cole Peterson led the way with a double and two singles. Taylor Feronti had three singles. Quinn Luhr and Frank Kocjancic each had a double and a single. Cameron Grumley and Kyle Sheldon each had two singles. C.J. Herbstritt and Devin Zilcoski each had a single.
The Elkers had eight hits in the contest. Ben MacDonald had three singles, while Josh Mitchell had a double and a single. Zac McKnight had two singles and JoJo Jaques had a single.
With two outs in the top of the first, Josh Mitchell singled for Ridgway. Ben MacDonald followed with a single. Mitchell was caught in a rundown between third and home for the final out of the top of the first. Mitchell Holmberg walked with two outs in the home half of the inning. Holmberg moved to second on a failed pickoff attempt. A single by Quinn Luhr scored Holmberg to give the Rams the 1-0 lead.
Peterson struck out the side in the top of the second. With one out, Taylor Feronti reached base on an infield single, as did Kyle Sheldon. Devin Zilcoski sacrificed Feronti and Sheldon moved up a base. A single by Peterson scored both Feronti and Sheldon. Peterson then scored on a wild pitch, making the score 4-0.
A double play thwarted a Ridgway threat in the top of the third inning. With one out in the bottom of the inning, Luhr doubled and moved to third on a passed ball. A double by Kocjancic scored Luhr with two outs. A single by Feronti scored Kocjancic, giving Johnsonburg the 6-0 lead.
The Elkers scored three runs in the top of the fourth when Mitchell led off with a walk. MacDonald singled. With two outs, Jaques singled, scoring both Mitchell and MacDonald. Jaques went to second on the play and was able to score on a single by McKnight to cut Johnsonburgâ€™s lead to 6-3. In the home half of the fourth, the Rams scored four times on seven hits. Zilcoski led off with a double. Peterson followed with a single. An infield single by Grumley scored Zilcoski. Holmberg hit into a fielderâ€™s choice, erasing Grumley. With two outs, Herbstritt singled, scoring Peterson and Holmberg. Kocjancic and Feronti both singled. A single by Sheldon scored Herbstritt, giving Johnsonburg the 10-3 lead.
In the top of the fifth, the Elkers scored a run when MacDonald doubled with two outs. A single by Sam Roselli scored MacDonald, making the score 10-4. Johnsonburg went in order thanks to a double play in the bottom of the fifth.
With two outs in the top of the sixth, Cody Delhunty drew a walk for Ridgway. He moved to second on a passed ball and scored on a single by McKnight, making the score 10-5. With one out in the bottom of the sixth, Herbstritt walked. With two outs, Feronti reached base on a dropped third strike. Sheldon walked to load the bases. Zilcoski reached base on an error, emptying the bases as Herbstritt, Feronti and Sheldon scored. A double by Peterson scored Zilcoski. A single by Grumley scored Peterson, giving the Rams the 15-5 victory with the mercy rule in effect.
