FOX TWP. â€“ The St. Marys Little League Baseball Junior League all-star squad took a 17-7, five-inning victory over Fox Township on Sunday afternoon in a contest played at Haller Field in Fox Township.
Ross Brennen started on the mound for St. Marys, working one and one-third innings and giving up two hits, walking three, and striking out four. Joe Nasoni took over for one and two-thirds of an inning, giving up four hits, walking two, and striking out three. Nate DaCanal worked the final two innings, giving up one hit, walking one, and striking out one.
Kyle Huff worked the first four innings for Fox, giving up 10 hits, walking five, and striking out four. Kyler Lenox took over on the mound for the remainder of the game, giving up four hits, walking one, and striking out one.
St. Marys had a total of 14 hits in the contest, and the team was led by Joe Nasoni with a double and a trio of singles. Ross Brennen had a double and a pair of singles, Brady Bauer had a pair of singles, Kyle Williams had a double, and Nate DaCanal, Austin Wolfel, Eric Gerber, and Frankie Singer all singled.
Fox Township had seven hits, led by Damon Krise with a pair of singles. Hunter Fantechi and Dakota Overturf each had a double. Andy Geci, Kyle Huff, and Kyle Leonard all singled.
St. Marys won the coin toss and elected to be the home team, so Fox Township had the opportunity to bat first. With one out, Krise singled to reach base and later stole second, but that is as far as he got as the next two batters went down in order. DaCanal led off with a walk to start the home half of the inning for St. Marys. DaCanal made it to second on a passed ball and later advanced to third on a single by Nasoni. A double by Brennen scored both DaCanal and Nassoni. Brennen advanced to third on a fielder's choice that saw Dalton Bauer out at first. Brady Bauer singled, scoring Brennen. Bauer would go on to steal second and make it to third on a passed ball. After Williams struck out for the second out, Wolfel was hit by a pitch and Gerber walked, loading the bases for St. Marys. The team was unable to take advantage of the situation, though, as Singer struck out, leaving the squad with a 3-0 lead.
Fox cut into St. Marys lead in the top of the second as they scored their first run. Huff led off with a single and advanced to second as Kyle Leonard walked. With Overturf up to bat, Huff and Leonard each picked up a base on a passed ball, and Overturf ended up walking to load the bases. Nate Dezanet walked, scoring Huff to make the score 3-1, and leaving the bases loaded, but the next two batters went down in order to prevent Fox from keeping their momentum going. St. Marys pushed through two more runs in the bottom of the inning. With one out, Nasoni singled, advancing to second on a passed ball and making it to third on an error. A single by Brennen scored Nasoni, and Brennen was able to advance to second on an error on the play. After Dalton Bauer went down swinging for the second out, Brady Bauer walked. With Williams up to bat, Brennen and Bauer each stole a base. As Williams walked, Brennen stole home, giving St. Marys a 5-1 lead. Bauer made it safely to third, and Williams was able to take second on the play. Bauer and Williams were left on base, though, as Wolfel went down swinging for the third out.
Fox answered St. Marys' two runs with a pair of their own in the top of the third. Fantechi started things off, reaching base on an error and taking advantage of passed balls to eventually advance to third. After Lenox struck out, Pecht walked, putting runners on the corners for Fox. With Huff up to bat, Pecht took off for second and was thrown out on the play. Fantechi was able to make it home though, putting another run on the board for Fox. Huff ended up walking and advanced as Leonard reached base on an error. A double by Overturf scored Huff, making the score 5-3 in favor of St. Marys. Ryan Sennett struck out for out number three, leaving two runners on base. St. Marys' batters went down in order in the home half of the inning.
Fox kept their momentum going, taking over the lead in the top of the fourth. Geci led off with a single and scored on a single by Krise. Krise made it to second on an error on the play and went on to score on a double by Fantechi. Lenox reached base on a fielder's choice that also advanced Fantechi to third. Pecht flied out to right field, scoring Fantechi. Huff singled, scoring Pecht, but then Huff got caught too far off the bag on the play and was thrown out. Leonard singled but was left stranded as Overturf flied out to the shortstop, leaving Fox Township's lead at 7-5. St. Marys managed one run in the bottom of the inning. Nasoni led off with a double and, after a pair of outs, scored on a single by Brady Bauer. Williams walked, sending Bauer to second, but both were left on base as Pat Schlimm flied out to right. The run cut Fox's lead to 7-6.
Fox left a pair of runners on base in the top of the fifth. Dezanet led off with a walk and advanced to second as Geci reached base on a fielder's choice. The next three batters went down in order though, preventing Fox from adding to their lead. St. Marys used a big home half of the inning to put the game away, scoring 11 runs to take a 17-7 advantage. Gerber started things off with a single, advancing to second on a fielder's choice by Singer. A single by DaCanal scored Gerber and sent Singer to third. DaCanal was also able to pick up an extra base on the play. Nasoni singled, scoring Singer. Before Fox pitcher Kyler Lenox even got a pitch off to Brennen, Nasoni took off for second, safely reaching the base and allowing DaCanal to steal home. Brennen flied out to left for the first out, scoring Nasoni in the process. Dalton Bauer reached base on an error and advanced to second on a fielder's choice by Brady Bauer. A double by Williams scored Dalton Bauer and sent Brady Bauer to third. Wolfel singled, scoring both Bauer and Williams. Wolfel also reached second on an error on the play and later stole third. Gerber walked, putting runners on the corners. A single by Singer scored Wolfel and sent Gerber to second. With DaCanal up to bat, Gerber and Singer each tried to advance a base on a passed ball. The Fox catcher threw to third to try to take out Gerber, but the throw was off, allowing Gerber to make it home and putting Singer on third. DaCanal reached base on a dropped third strike and picked up second on an overthrow on the play, which also allowed Singer to score. DaCanal advanced to third on a fielder's choice that saw Nasoni out at first. Brennen ended the game with a walk-off single, scoring DaCanal to give St. Marys the 17-7 victory.
With the win, St. Marys will advance to face the winner of a match-up between Brockway and Ridgway on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at a site to be announced. The loss eliminated Fox Township from the District 10 tournament.
