Junior softball all-stars open District 10 play with win over Ridgway

The St. Marys Little League Softball Junior all-star squad opened play in the District 10 Tournament Tuesday evening by defeating the Ridgway all-stars by a 14-1 score in five innings in a game played at Benzinger Park.
St. Marys will travel to DuBois on Saturday afternoon for a 4 p.m. contest. DuBois defeated Punxsutawney 12-2 in five innings on Tuesday.
Ridgway will play host to Brookville in an elimination game this evening at 6 p.m.
The St. Marys squad had 11 hits in Tuesday’s game, led by Sara Newell’s three singles. Sydney Hoffman and Jolene Renwick each added two singles. Maddy Schneider, Abbey Bauer, Brittany Geitner and Sophia Viglione all singled.
For Ridgway, Rayna Pavlock had a double and a single while Paige Grazioli and Abbey Lineberger each singled.
Abbey Bauer went the distance on the mound for St. Marys, giving up four hits, walking two and striking out nine. Sierra Kos went the distance for Ridgway, giving up 11 hits, walking five and striking out three.
Ridgway won the coin toss and elected to be the home team.
In the top half of the first inning, St. Marys was able to score five runs. Sydney Hoffman led off with a bunt single. She stole second and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Maddy Schneider. Renwick reached base on an error, scoring Hoffman, and Bauer walked. Both Renwick and Bauer moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt by Cheyenne Bothun, then Newell singled to score both Renwick and Bauer. Brittany Geitner singled and moved around all the way to third on an error on the play, allowing Newell to score. Caitlyn Bankovich reached base on an error, scoring Geitner and giving St. Marys the 5-0 lead. With two outs, Hollie Schneider walked for Ridgway but was left stranded.
With one out in the top of the second, Schneider singled and stole second. She moved to third on an infield single by Renwick and was able to score on a passed ball. Renwick stole second and scored when Bauer reached second on an error. With two outs, Newell singled to score Bauer as St. Marys led 8-0. In the home half of the second, Park reached base on an error. She scored on a double by Pavlock to cut the St. Marys lead to 8-1.
St. Marys scored a run in the top half of the third inning when Sophia Viglione reached base on an error with one out. She wound up at third on the play. She was able to score on a wild pitch as St. Marys took a 9-1 lead. Ridgway went down in order in their half of the inning.
Both teams stranded two runners in the fourth inning. In the top of the fifth, Renwick singled with one out. She stole second and moved to third on a single by Bauer. Renwick scored on a passed ball. Bothun was hit by a pitch. A single by Newell scored Bauer, with Newell moving to second on the play. Geitner reached base on an error, which allowed Bothun to score. Newell scored on a passed ball. With two outs, Viglione singled, scoring Geitner as St. Marys took a 14-1 lead. Ridgway went down in order in the home half of the fifth inning as St. Marys won the game 14-1.
