Kayla Hoohuli leads Lady Dutch to 57-48 win

Led by Kayla Hoohuli’s 46 points, the St. Marys Area Lady Dutch defeated the Punxsutawney Lady Chucks by a 57-48 score last night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.
The Lady Chucks led 26-20 at the half. In the second 16 minutes of play, the Lady Dutch outscored the Lady Chucks by a 37-22 margin to win the game. Hoohuli finished the second half with 28 to go along with the 18 she scored in the first half.
The Lady Dutch had a rough shooting night in the first half, as they only hit on eight field goals. Punxsy led by six at the half.
“If you are going to stand around both offensively and defensively, things like that are going to happen every time,” said St. Marys coach Bob Swanson.
“We played better team basketball in the second half and we had to vary things up defensively in the second half,” Swanson said. “Mandy Gerarge played probably her best game of the year tonight as she finished with 10 rebounds while battling Punxsy’s big girl. Kayla (Hoohuli) added 10 steals, Kiana Hoohuli four steals and Jenna Anderson three steals.”
The St. Marys offense was led by Kayla Hoohuli with 46 points on 11 twos, four threes and a 12-for-14 night from the foul line. Adair Gennocro and Gerarge each added four points.
For the Lady Chucks, Shawnna Crago had 20 points on nine field goals and a two-for-three night from the foul line. Paris Kernich scored 11 points on one two, two threes and a three-for-four night from the foul line.
Crago gave the Lady Chucks an early 2-0 lead by sinking two foul shots. Two threes by Kernich made the score 8-0. Hoohuli scored at the 5:23 mark. Crago hit a two, Alex Magill a two and Crago added another two as Punxsy led 14-2 with 1:20 left in the first period. Hoohuli sank three foul shots, making the score 14-5 after the first period of play.
Jenna Reitz hit a three for Punxsy to open the second period. Kernich added a foul shot, 18-5. Hoohuli made it 18-7 before Crago scored twice and Taylor Newcome once, 24-7. Gerarge scored a two at the 3:37 mark, then Hoohuli connected on two threes to make the score 24-15. Johnna Depp scored for Punxsy before Hoohuli hit a two and converted a three-point play as the first half ended with the Lady Chucks on top 26-20.
Hoohuli scored a bucket off a steal, then added a three, cutting the Punxsy lead to 26-25. Crago scored for Punxsy before Kiana Hoohuli hit a three for St. Marys to tie the game at 28. Crago made it 30-28. St. Marys went on a 7-0 run as Hoohuli scored five and Gerarge two to give St. Marys the 35-30 lead. Crago scored again for Punxsy before Hoohuli scored on a three and a two, 40-32. Newcome hit a three for the Lady Chucks cutting the St. Marys lead to 40-35 with eight minutes remaining.
Crago scored to open the fourth quarter. Hoohuli converted one of two before Kernich scored for Punxsy, 41-39. Hoohuli added two field goals as the Lady Dutch went up 45-39. Newcome scored for Punxsy, with Hoohuli sinking two foul shots, 47-41, with 5:15 left in the game. Crago and Hoohuli traded buckets. Punxsy scored on four foul shots, making the score 49-47 with four minutes left in the game. Gennocro sank a foul shot, 50-47. With 2:27 left, Hoohuli sank two foul shots, 52-47. A three by Gennocro made it 55-47 with 1:47 left. Hoohuli made the score 57-47 with two foul shots at the 30-second mark. Reitz sank a foul shot, making the score 57-48 in favor of the Lady Dutch.

Game notes
St. Marys is now 12-1 overall and 4-1 in the District 9 League.

The Lady Dutch return to action Friday when they play host to the Clearfield Lady Bisons. Junior varsity starts at 6 p.m., with the varsity to follow at 7:30 p.m.

Friday will be a “White Out” night for the Lady Dutch fans.

The St. Marys junior varsity defeated the Lady Chucks by a 39-33 score.
The Lady Dutch outscored the Lady Chucks 13-8 in the first quarter. Punxsy outscored St. Marys 11-6 in the second quarter to tie the game at 19 at the half.
The Lady Dutch outscored Punxsy 12-6 in the third period. Both teams scored eight fourth-quarter points as St. Marys won 39-33.
