The Lady Chucks of Punxsutawney handed the St. Marys Area Lady Dutch a 6-0 setback in a softball game played on Monday afternoon at the Benzinger Park field. The game was moved from the St. Marys Area softball field to Benzinger due to wet conditions at the Lady Dutch home field.
Randa Depp, a left-handed hurler, picked up the victory for the Lady Chucks as she threw a three-hitter, striking out six and walking no one. Kelsey Fritz took the loss for the Lady Dutch, giving up six runs on 10 hits, striking out four and walking one. Both teams committed two errors in the game.
"We made a few errors early in the game and they took advantage of them and we never recovered," said Manny Gerarge, Lady Dutch coach. "We were very flat at the start of the game, but as the game progressed we started to hit the ball a lot better, but they were shots that were right at the fielders."
"The layoff from Friday to today seemed to have an effect on the girls, as it took them awhile to get into the swing of things today," Gerarge added. "We will have to regroup and get ready for Brookville on Wednesday."
The Lady Dutch had three hits in the game, with Erica Sorg, Kali Quagliani and Hayley McGowan each getting one. The Lady Chucks pounded out 10 hits in the game, with Taylor Powell leading the way with three hits, two singles and a triple. Ashley Barenchile had two hits, a triple and single, while Tia Davis had a triple, and Jenna Reitz, Johnna Depp, Kristen Fedder, and Allis Shields each had a single.
The Punxsutawney girls opened the game by scoring two first-inning runs. Barenchile tripled to open the inning, then scored on a sacrifice fly by Neal. Powell singled, but was forced at second on a fielder's choice by Crago. Crago then stole second and third and scored on a single by Reitz to make it 2-0.
Punxsutawney threatened to score in the second inning as they had runners on second and third with one out, but Fritz struck out the leadoff hitter for out number two, then got the next girl to ground out to short to end the threat.
Punxsy returned to the scoring column in the third inning when after two outs, Reitz reached first on an error, then scored on Davis' triple. Davis then came home on a single by Depp to make the score 4-0.
Punxsutawney ended the scoring in the game in the fourth inning as they picked up two more runs. Shields drew a walk, went to third on a single by Barenchik and scored on a sacrifice bunt by Near. Barenchik scored when Powell tripled. This made the score 6-0, where it remained for the rest of the game.
Both teams had base runners in the closing two innings, but neither was able to score any runs and the game ended with the Lady Chucks in front 6-0.
