ECC travels to SMA this afternoon
The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader tennis team raised their record to 10-1 with a 9-0 victory over the Brockway Lady Rovers Thursday at the Benzinger and Memorial Park courts.
“Today we enjoyed a really nice tennis match with a short-handed but improving Brockway squad. Brockway has a very nice team again this year. They have four sophomores that have gotten a lot better and they are going to be a lot of fun to watch the next two years,” said ECCHS coach Pete Meier.
“We adjusted the lineup today to give some of our players a change of pace and the girls responded with some great tennis,” said Meier.
At first singles, ECC’s Kristin Dippold defeated Anna Brinkley 6-1, 6-2.
At second singles, Sophie Herzing of ECC beat Taylor Hepler 6-2, 6-0.
Abby Wittman of ECC defeated Alicia McConnell 6-0, 6-0 at third singles.
At fourth singles, Marla Scacchitti of the Lady Crusaders defeated Hali Ball 6-0, 6-1.
At fifth single, ECC’s Rachel Stauffer defeated Kaitlyn Snedden 6-0, 6-1.
“All of our singles players looked very good in their matches and both of our doubles teams also played great. The shot of the day came in the second doubles match, where Linnea Stager drew cheers from the crowd for a great backhand shot to win the point,” said Meier.
At first doubles, ECC’s Laira Reuscher and Maria Gismondi defeated Anna Brinkley and Taylor Hepler 8-1.
At second doubles, Elk’s Elizabeth Nicklas and Linnea Stager defeated Hali Ball and Kaitlyn Snedden 8-1.
Elk Catholic won third and fourth doubles by forfeit.
“Next week marks the beginning of October and the start of the District 9 tennis tournaments. There are a lot of good tennis players in District 9 this year and the matches should be entertaining to watch. We have some things to work on, but overall we’re playing good tennis. I’m extremely proud of this team,” added Meier.
Elk Catholic returns to action this afternoon when they travel to St. Marys Area for a 3:30 p.m. match with the Lady Dutch.
