The Elk Catholic Lady Crusader tennis team picked up an 8-1 win over St. Marys Area on Thursday afternoon in matches played at Benzinger and Memorial parks.
"Everyone at today's match witnessed some great tennis between two very good tennis teams. The weather was nice, the singles matches were well played, and it was another really good day for District 9 tennis. St. Marys is a nice team and they played very well today," said ECC coach Pete Meier.
Elk Catholic's lone loss of the day came at first singles as St. Marys Area's Amy Orr defeated Laira Reuscher 6-1, 7-5.
"Number one singles was a hotly contested match between two of the area's better tennis players, Amy Orr and Laira Reuscher, with Amy coming out on top after a long, hard-fought second set," Meier said.
At second singles, ECC's Maria Gismondi defeated Aubrey Weisner 6-1, 6-2.
At third singles, Lady Crusader Kristin Dippold beat Chelsea Agosti 7-6 (7-4), 6-3.
"The singles match of the day came at #3 singles where Kristin Dippold and Chelsea Agosti played a great back and forth two-set match. The first set ended in a tiebreaker and Kristin rallied from down three to win the second set. It was a great match to watch between two very good players," Meier said.
At fourth singles, ECC's Sophie Herzing won 6-0, 6-1 over Danielle McCoy, and at fifth singles, Abby Wittman gave ECC another win, defeating Emily Challingsworth 6-2, 6-0.
Elk Catholic swept all four doubles matches.
"Our doubles teams also played very well again today, especially Marla Scacchitti and Rachel Stauffer, who played a great match at #3 doubles," Meier said.
At first doubles the duo of Laira Reuscher and Maria Gismondi defeated Aubrey Weisner and Chelsea Agosti 8-1. At second doubles Sophie Herzing and Abby Wittman beat Amy Orr and Danielle McCoy 8-6.
"The doubles match of the day came at #2 doubles where Sophie Herzing and Abby Wittman battled Amy Orr and Danielle McCoy. The score reflected the closeness of the match between two evenly matched doubles teams with Sophie and Abby getting the victory," Meier said.
At third doubles Marla Scacchitti and Rachel Stauffer took an 8-1 win over Emily Challingsworth and Megan McCoy.
At fourth doubles Elizabeth Nicklas and Linnea Stager won 8-2 over Madison Squires and Rebecca Aloi.
"Both teams have a lot of players, so we were able to play a number of exhibition matches today," Meier said. "The younger members of each team played very well and tennis in our community should be well represented for years to come. We have some good young players. They get better with each practice, they played well today, and it is really a pleasure coaching them."
In exhibition for ECC, Danielle Healy and Megan McKenna beat Kelsea Kerner and Ashley Mertz 6-2, Hannah Wittman and Darby Hetrick won 6-0 over Christine Harlan and Michaela Deming, Maddie Foringer and Ann Ordiway lost 2-6 to Sam Forster and Ashley Floravit; KaliAnn Kirst and Sophie Viglione beat Madison Squires and Rebecca Aloi 6-5, Danielle Wolfel and Brittany Lenze picked up a 6-3 win; and Meaghan Coppolo and Torie Gleixner were edged 5-6.
"ECC and St. Marys have played some great matches over the years, and today was no different," Meier said. "Our girls played good tennis today. The matches were well played, there were a lot of great shots, and it was a lot of fun to watch. It's always nice to play at home, so after being on the road to start the season, this was the first of four consecutive home matches for us. Everyone continues to play good tennis, we continue to improve, and most importantly we're having fun. I am extremely proud of this team."
ECC will return to action on Tuesday as they host Johnsonburg in a 3:30 p.m. match. St. Marys will host DuBois Area on Monday at 3:30 p.m.
