Lady Crusader tennis team edges Lady Dutch 5-4

The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader tennis team edged the St. Marys Area Lady Dutch squad 5-4 in a match played at the SMAHS courts Wednesday afternoon.
At first singles, ECC’s Kylie Auman, who returned to the line-up after some time off for an illness, defeated Rachel Walker 6-1, 6-2.
At second singles, Allison Shields of the Lady Dutch came back after being down in the first set to win her match over Crystal Hanes in three sets, 3-6, 6-1, 10-6.
Loreal Housler of ECC defeated Brandi Meyer 6-2, 6-2 at third singles.
Ally Brock of the Lady Crusaders defeated Amy Orr , who played a great match, 6-4, 7-5.
Megan Fritz of ECC beat Jamie VanAlstine 6-3, 6-2 at fifth singles.
At first doubles, Rachel Walker and Brandi Meyer of the Lady Dutch defeated Loreal Housler and Brittany Auman 8-1.
At second doubles, SMA’s Allie Shields and Jamie VanAlstine defeated Kristin Dippold and Abby Wittman 8-0.
Laira Reuscher and Maria Gismondi of the Lady Crusaders defeated Amy Orr and Stephanie Buerk 8-4 at third doubles.
At fourth doubles, Sophie Herzing and Kathryn Ordiway of ECC defeated Chelsea Agosti and Aubrey Wiesner 8-1.
“All the girls from both squads played fine matches today,” said St. Marys coach Sue Lepovetsky.
“The first singles match saw the return of Kylie Auman from a month long absence due to a collapsed lung,” said ECCHS coach Pete Meier.
“These girls have played an awful lot of tennis in the past week and we just seem to get better every time we step on the court,” added Meier.
St. Marys, now 6-5 on the season, will travel to Bradford this afternoon for a 3:30 p.m. match with the Lady Owls.
Elk Catholic, now 10-4 on the season, return to action Monday when they meet the Lady Dutch for the District 9-AA team championship at DuBois Area. The match is scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. start.
