Lady Crusader volleyball team downs Ramettes 3-0
The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader volleyball team raised their dual-match record to 7-0 on the season with a 3-0 victory over the Johnsonburg Ramettes last night at the ECCHS gym.The Lady Crusaders won the first set by a 25-23 score. They took the second set 25-18 and won the third set by a 25-8 margin.“We were slow to make adjustments but once we did we played well,” said ECCHS coach Diane Gies. “The last game tonight was the best we played both offensively and defensively. Now we have to keep working to get better,” added Gies.In the first set, the score went back and forth, with neither team holding more than a two-point lead. Late in the set, the Ramettes were up 22-12 when Elk got the serve back with Marissa Cunningham serving. A kill by Cunningham tied the score at 22. Elk made it 23-22 off a block. Jessie Ginther recorded a kill for ECC, 24-22. Brittany Watts made the score 24-23 off a block. Johnsonburg hit the ball out of bounds, giving ECC the 25-23 win.The second set saw Taylor DaCanal give ECC the 5-0 lead as she recorded an ace, with Kristie Wehler and Ginther both recording a kill. The rest of the set went back and forth as Elk maintained a five-to-seven- point lead. The Ramettes were able to close the gap to three points on a point by Watts. Elk got the serve back on a block by Carli Schneider, 19-15. Elk Catholic went on to win the set by a 25-18 score.With Cunningham serving, the Lady Crusaders opened a 7-0 lead. Cunningham had two aces in that stretch, while Schneider had two kills and a block and Wehler had a kill. Elk got the serve back, leading 8-1. With Wehler serving, they opened a 12-1 lead. Ginther had a kill and Schneider a block. With Elk leading 13-2, Camille Smithbauer served five straight points. Anna VanEerden had three kills and Schneider one. Johnsonburg was called in the net, 19-3. The teams traded sideouts, 20-4. Hayley DaCanal served an ace and Elk got a point on a hit out of bounds. A tip by Watts made it 22-5. With Sam Bevacqua serving, ECC hit the ball out of bounds and Watts recorded a kill. ECC got the serve back leading 24-8 on a kill by VanEerden. With VanEerden serving, Taylor DaCanal recorded a kill, giving the Lady Crusaders the 25-8 win.“The first game was one of our better efforts. We passed well and hit the ball well,” said Johnsonburg coach Bill Shuey.“The second game we got behind and you can’t get behind on good teams. But we’re coming along, we’ll get better,” added Shuey.Taylor DaCanal led ECC with 10 service points, while Marissa Cunningham had nine and Hayley DaCanal eight. Jessie Ginther recorded eight kills, while Anna VanEerden had eight and Carli Schneider four to go along with her four blocks.Brittany Watts had five service points for the Ramettes, while Chelsea Benson had three kills and two blocks.In junior varsity action, Elk Catholic won in two sets, 25-7 and 25-11.Elk Catholic, now 7-0, will be off until next Tuesday when they host the DuBois Area Lady Beavers. Junior varsity begins at 6 p.m., followed by varsity.Johnsonburg, now 2-4 overall, will travel to Punxsutawney on Thursday. Junior varsity action begins at 6 p.m., with varsity to follow.
