Lady Crusaders advance with 53-47 victory over Indians

ECC to play Vincentian Wednesday at Punxsy

JOHNSTOWN - The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders advanced to the second round of the PIAA Class A girls’ tournament with a 53-47 victory over the Southern Fulton Indians Saturday afternoon. The first-round game was played at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown.
The Lady Crusaders will now take on the Vincentian Academy Lady Royals Wednesday night at 7 p.m. at the Punxsutawney Area High School. The Royals edged the Kane Lady Wolves 62-60 in overtime Saturday afternoon.
Southern Fulton held a 13-12 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Lady Crusaders went on a 10-0 run to start the second quarter as they opened a 23-13 lead with 5:34 left in the half. The Lady Crusaders held a 30-23 lead at the half and trailed 39-38 at the end of three quarters.
“We played strong defense in the first half,” said ECCHS coach Ken Pistner. “Their two guards (Macey Hollenshead and Taelor Morton) are good players.”
“We didn’t finish the first half the way we wanted too,” said Pistner, referring to Southern Fulton hitting two threes at the end of the half to cut Elk’s lead from 13 points to seven. “We played a little different defense to slow 5 (Macey Hollenshead) down and I think our quickness late in the game showed.”
“The big thing was that we didn’t panic, played within ourselves and did a really nice job,” added Pistner. “We beat a really good team.”
Pistner also noted that Abbi Petrosky, Lexie Meholic and Taylor DaCanal came up with big rebounds late in the contest.
The Lady Crusader offense was led by Kristy Hanes with 17 points on three twos, three threes and a two-for-two night from the foul line. Abbi Petrosky scored 13 points on three field goals and a seven-for-nine night from the foul line. Taylor DaCanal scored 11 points on four field goals and a three-for-four night from the foul line.
Southern Fulton was led by Macey Hollenshead with 16 points on six twos, one three and a one-for-four night from the foul line. Taelor Morton scored 14 points on three twos, two threes and a two-for-two night from the foul line.
The Lady Indians took a 4-0 lead as Morton connected on a field goal and later added two foul shots. Hanes made the score 4-2. Courtney Strait sank a foul shot for Southern Fulton, 5-2. Hanes tied the game with a three at the 5:11 mark, then gave ECC the 8-5 lead with another three at the 4:45 mark. Southern Fulton went on a 6-0 run, 11-8. DaCanal and Macey Hollenshead traded buckets, 13-10. A field goal by ECC’s Julia Sweeney cut the Southern Fulton lead to 13-12 at the end of one period of play.
Meholic gave Elk the 14-13 lead to start the second quarter. They added eight unanswered points to lead 23-13. DaCanal had a field goal and two foul shots, Petrosky converted a three-point play and Maggie Sorg hit a field goal in that run. Southern Fulton’s Ashley Roman and Hanes traded buckets. Macey Hollenshead’s field goal cut Elk’s lead to 25-17. A three by Hanes and two foul shots by Morgan Onink gave Elk the 30-17 lead with 1:22 left in the half. Morton and Macey Hollenshead hit threes, cutting Elk’s halftime lead to 30-23.
The Indians cut Elk’s lead to 30-27 early in the third quarter. Meholic sank a foul shot, with DaCanal scoring on the putback on her next shot, 33-27. Southern Fulton cut Elk’s lead to 33-32 with 4:06 left in the quarter. Petrosky and Roman traded buckets, with Morton hitting a three to give the Lady Indians the 37-35 lead. Two foul shots by Petrosky tied the game at 37 with 2:35 left. She added another foul shot at the 2:06 mark, 38-37. Macey Hollenshead gave the Lady Indians the 39-38 lead after three quarters.
The teams traded buckets to open the fourth quarter. Petrosky converted two foul shots, giving Elk the 42-41 lead. Roman sank two, giving the Indians the 43-42 lead. DaCanal tied the game with a foul shot. Macey Hollenshead and Strait scored to give Southern Fulton the 47-43 lead with 3:26 left in the game. The Lady Indians would not score the rest of the game. Meholic sank a foul shot to cut the Lady Indian lead to 47-46. Hanes scored off a steal, 48-47. DaCanal made it 50-47 with a field goal. Petrosky would add a foul shot and Hanes two as the Lady Crusaders advanced with the 53-47 victory.

Game notes
The Lady Crusaders are now 24-4 on the season. They will take on the 26-1 Vincentian Academy Lady Royals Wednesday night at 7 p.m. at Punxsutawney High School.

Southern Fulton ended their season with a 22-2 record.

Advance tickets for Wednesday’s game with Vincentian will be on sale a ECCHS from 7:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. today through Wednesday. Advance adult tickets are $6 and students are $3. All tickets at the door, if available, will be $6.
