Lady Crusaders defeat Lady Cardinals 44-30

The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders remained undefeated on their young season as they handed the DuBois Central Catholic Lady Cardinals a 44-30 loss last night in a game played at Elk County Catholic High School. "I thought we were real strong defensively other than a little two- to three-minute span at the end of the first quarter where we weren't in the game," said ECC coach Ken Pistner. "Overall we played pretty good defense."ECC was led offensively by senior Lexie Meholic with 14 points on six twos and a two-for-two night from the foul line. Junior Taylor DaCanal added 12 points on four twos and a four-for-four night from the line. DCC was led by Lauresa Gulvas with 13 points on five twos and a three. "They (DuBois Central) played hard. They played physical, and I thought we matched their intensity," Pistner said.ECC ran up six points on buckets by Maggie Sorg, Meholic and Abbi Petrosky before DCC finally got on the board just over two minutes in with back-to-back buckets by Maria French to make the score 6-4. The Lady Crusaders re-extended their lead to 11-6 on a bucket and foul shot by Petrosky and a bucket by Meholic before the Lady Cardinals used another bucket by French and buckets by Kylee Schaffer and Gulvas to take the 12-11 lead. ECC tied things up with a foul shot by Julia Sweeney with just over 30 seconds left in the quarter, but a two by Gulvas just before the buzzer saw the Lady Cardinals take a 14-12 lead into the second quarter.
