The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader tennis team successfully defended their District 9-AA tennis team championship on Monday by defeating the St. Marys Area Lady Dutch by a 4-1 score in a match played at Memorial Park.
“Our girls were ready to play today,” said ECCHS coach Pete Meier. “It was a great season.
“This was the best that Abby Meyer and Loreal Housler have played in four years. They were outstanding. Loreal battled against a tough opponent.
“Laira Reuscher played a great match against a good player in Marta Vega, who hasn’t lost all year. St. Marys has a nice team and they also have the District 9-AA singles champ in Amy Orr.
“Maria (Gismondi) and Sophie (Herzing) played well today. It was a good match between two really good teams.”
The Lady Crusaders took a 1-0 lead as the first match completed was first singles, where ECC’s Abby Meyer defeated Amy Orr 6-0, 6 -3.
Elk Catholic took the 2-0 lead when Loreal Housler defeated Mary Rosman 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 at second singles.
St. Marys picked up their lone victory of the afternoon at third singles when Marta Vega defeated Laira Reuscher 6-1, 6-2, cutting Elk’s lead to 2-1.
Elk Catholic’s first doubles team of Maria Gismondi and Sophie Herzing gave the Lady Crusaders the title when they defeated Chelsea Agosti and Aubrey Wiesner 6-1, 6-2.
In the final match of the day, ECC’s Abby Wittman and Kristin Dippold downed Danielle McCoy and Stephanie Buerk 6-1, 6-1.
“We had a good season,” said St. Marys coach Sue Lepovetsky. “The girls did well today; unfortunately, we didn’t come out on top. We battled through a lot of injuries today.”
