Lady Crusaders down Curwensville 53-34

The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader basketball team used a big third quarter to defeat the Curwensville Lady Tide by a 53-34 score Wednesday night in a game played at the ECCHS gym.The first 16 minutes of play saw the Lady Crusaders take a 21-14 lead at the half. In the third period of play, Elk Catholic outscored the Lady Tide by a 20-6 margin to open a 41-20 lead with eight minutes remaining. Curwensville outscored the Lady Crusaders by a 14-12 score in the fourth quarter, making the final score 53-34 in favor of the Lady Crusaders.“We got off to a slow start tonight. We had 11 turnovers in the first half,” said ECCHS coach Ken Pistner. “We played well in the third quarter, as our defensive pressure caused several turnovers.” Unofficially, Curwensville had 31 turnovers in the contest to Elk Catholic’s 18. “Our defensive pressure gave us a few easy points. We were more patient in the second half as we had some decent looks,” added Pistner.The Lady Crusaders were led by Abbi Petrosky with 16 points on six field goals and a four-for-four night from the foul line. Karly Carnovale was next with 13 points on four twos, one three and a two-for-two night from the foul line. For Curwensville, Katrina Seaburn had 17 points on six field goals and a five-for-seven night from the foul line. Savannah Strickland was next with seven points.The game opened with Katie Wrigglesworth giving Curwenvsille the early 2-0 lead. Buckets by Petrosky and Lexie Meholic gave Elk the 4-2 lead. Rebecca Johnson of the Tide tied the game at 4-all with a bucket. Petrosky and Seaburn traded buckets. Kristy Hanes and Anna Hawkins hit buckets to give Elk the 10-6 lead at the end of the first period.Strickland scored for Curwensville to open the second period. Carnovale sank two foul shots as Elk went up 12-8. A Curwensville field goal and foul shot made it 12-11. Buckets by Petrosky and Carnovale made it 16-11, then Strickland hit a three to make the score 16-14. Petrosky sank a foul shot and added a field goal and Emily Gregory hit a field goal as Elk led 21-14 at the half.The Lady Crusaders opened the second half with an 8-0 run to take a 29-14 lead. Seaburn scored for the Tide. Carnovale hit a three, Petrosky added a two and Carnovale hit a two as Elk went up 36-16. Seaburn scored for the Tide, 36-18, with 3:19 left in the third period. Petrosky sank two foul shots, Carnovale hit a two and Hawkins hit a foul shot to give Elk the 41-18 lead. Strickland scored, making the score 41-20 at the end of three quarters.Meholic scored for Elk to open the fourth period. Curwensville went on a 5-0 run to make it 43-25 with 4:21 left. Hanes hit a field goal and Seaburn sank two foul shots, 45-27. The teams traded buckets, 47-29. Hawkins hit a field goal and Seaburn hit two foul shots. Taylor DaCanal scored on a field goal and Hawkins hit two foul shots, making the score 53-31. Seaburn scored three points in the closing minutes, but Elk maintained the lead to win the game with a final score of 53-34.Game notesThe Lady Crusaders are now 7-4 on the year.
