Lady Crusaders improve to 17-2 with 50-31 win over Brookville

The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusader basketball team improved to 17-2 on the season with a 50-31 victory over the Brookville Lady Raiders Monday night at the ECCHS gym.
The Lady Crusaders were able to force 15 Brookville turnovers in the first 16 minutes of play to open a 25-9 halftime lead. Elk outscored Brookville 13-6 in the first period. The Lady Crusaders outscored the Lady Raiders 25-22 in the second half.
“I thought we played pretty well during the course of the game,” said ECCHS coach Ken Pistner. “We played real well defensively.”
“I thought Brookville did a good job on the boards against us tonight,” said Pistner.
“I’m sure it is going to be a different story down there Wednesday night,” said Pistner, referring to Elk Catholic’s next game, which is Wednesday night at Brookville.
“We were able to do some good things offensively and defensively tonight. This is the time of the year you have to be playing good basketball,” added Pistner.
The Lady Crusaders were led offensively by Lexie Meholic with 12 points on four twos, one three and a one-for-two night from the foul line. Taylor DaCanal added 11 points on four field goals and a three-for-four night from the foul line. Kristy Hanes scored nine points and Abbi Petrosky eight.
Brookville was led by Karly Reinsel with 16 points on six twos, one three and a one-for-one night from the foul line. Aisha Newsome was next with eight points.
The Lady Crusaders scored the first six points of the game as Hanes connected on a two, Meholic hit a three and then a minute later converted two foul shots. Reinsel hit a field goal and Lanae Newsome sank a foul shot before Elk went on another 6-0 run as Petrosky scored on a putback and Meholic had two field goals, 12-3. Aisha Newsome hit a three, 12-6. Petrosky converted one of two foul shots as the Lady Crusaders took a 13-6 lead after one quarter.
Hanes made it 15-6 with 6:35 left in the first half. Meholic scored on a putback at the 5:21 mark, 17-6. Madison Hill scored for Brookville before Maggie Sorg scored twice to give Elk the 21-8 lead. Reinsel converted one of two foul shots, 21-9. Petrosky hit a field goal with 2:12 left. DaCanal converted two foul shots with 1.4 seconds left to give ECC the 25-9 halftime lead.
The Lady Crusaders scored the first six points of the second half as Meholic hit a bucket and DaCanal added two more, 31-9. Samantha Byerly sank two foul shots for Brookville. DaCanal scored on a putback before Reinsel hit a three for the Lady Raiders. Hanes hit a three for Elk, with Reinsel getting a two for Brookville, 36-16. DaCanal, Petrosky and Morgan Onink all hit field goals for Elk an Petrosky added a foul shot, 43-16, with 2:54 left in the period. Aisha Newsome hit a three and Reinsel added a two, 43-21. Onink closed out the scoring in the third period, giving Elk the 45-21 lead with one period remaining.
Brookville scored the first four points of the fourth quarter. Hanes hit a field goal and DaCanal added a foul shot, 48-25. Reinsel scored for Brookville, 48-27. Macy Neureiter scored for Elk before Reinsel hit two buckets for Brookville, making the final score 50-31 in favor of the Lady Crusaders.

Game notes
The Lady Crusaders are now 17-2 on the season. They are 5-2 in District 9 League play.

Elk Catholic returns to action Wednesday when they travel to Brookville to meet the Lady Raiders in another D9 League game. Last night’s game was a make-up from Jan. 20.

Last night was Grade School Appreciation Night for the Lady Cavalier and Lady Crusader programs.

The Elk Catholic junior varsity team defeated Brookville by a 33-26 score.
Brookville took a 7-3 first-quarter lead. The Lady Crusaders outscored the Lady Raiders 9-7 in the second quarter to cut Brookville’s lead to 14-12 at the half.
Elk outscored Brookville 12-3 in the third period. Both teams scored nine fourth-quarter points as ECC won 33-26.
