The Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders celebrated Senior Night by keeping their slate clean on Thursday as they made short work of their match with the Sheffield Lady Wolverines. The Lady Crusaders won the match by a 3-0 score as they won the opening game 25-10, took the second game 25-12, and won the third and final game by a 25-14 score in a match held at the Aaron J. Straub Gym on the ECCHS campus.
"This was a good win for us, as we played very well tonight," said Diane Gies, ECCHS head coach. "We added some plays to our offense and they worked very well tonight. Being able to work on these plays in an actual game situation will help us as we prepare to enter the playoffs."
"We have a couple of tough games next week in Ridgway and Johnsonburg, and our tournament on Saturday," noted Gies. "These games and tournaments should be a good warm-up for the District Nine playoffs, which will begin the following week. If we are to do well in the playoffs, we will have to continue to play excellent volleyball, as there are some very good teams in District Nine."
Lexie Meholic led the Lady Crusaders in kills on Thursday, finishing the night with 13. She also had three service points. Following Meholic in the kill department was Taylor Frank with eight. Taylor Schlimm added six kills, while Emily Gregory had five, Alexis Schlimm two and Taylor DaCanal one.
Emily Gregory led the team in service points with 18. Alexis Schlimm and Anna Hawkins were next with nine each, followed by Taylor Frank with seven and Taylor Schlimm with two.
The Lady Crusaders jumped on the Lady Wolverines right away in the first game as they moved out to a 12-0 lead, mainly on the strength of the 11 service points by Gregory. Sheffield never recovered from the big ECCHS lead, and the Lady Crusaders went on win the game by a 25-10 score. Meholic had six kills in this game.
In game two, the Lady Wolverines stayed close early in the game. They were up 6-5 at one point, but the Lady Crusaders took over the lead by an 8-6 score and never trailed again, going on to win by a 25-12 score. In this game, Frank and Hawkins each had seven service points, while Frank and Taylor Schlimm had three kills each.
The final game of the match found the Lady Crusaders taking an early lead which they never lost throughout the game. The Lady Crusaders took a 3-1 lead, then pushed it to 11-8, 16-11 and eventually won by a 25-14 score. Meholic again led the Lady Crusaders in kills in this game with seven, while Alexis Schlimm had six service points and Gregory five service points.
The Lady Crusaders are now 12-0 on the season and will return to action on Saturday when they host the Elk Catholic Volleyball Tournament. On Tuesday, the Lady Crusaders will host Ridgway, then on Thursday they will close out their regular season at Johnsonburg.
