The St. Marys Area High Lady Dutch advanced to the finals of the Elk County Holiday Tournament with a 65-36 victory over the Lady Elkers of Ridgway Area High in the opening round of the tournament, held at St. Marys Area High School on Wednesday evening.
The Lady Dutch will take on the Lady Crusaders, a 35-29 winner over Johnsonburg in the other opening-round game, in the tournament finals tonight at 6:30 p.m. at the Dutch Oven.
"This was a good win for us tonight," said Coach Bob Swanson of the Lady Dutch. "We started out a little slow, but came on strong after we decided to start playing. Ridgway gave us a battle in the first quarter, as they led for most of the quarter, until Kayla (Hoohuli) hit the three foul goals at the end of the period to give us the lead for good."
"We played good defense tonight as we kept pressure on Ridgway. When we slacked off, the Ridgway girls were able to score on us," he noted. "We keep preaching to the girls that defense wins the ball game and tonight proved that, as we were not at our best offensively, at least in the early going. Offensively we didn't shoot the ball as well as I would have liked, as we hit on only 14 percent of our three-point shots, although our regular field goal percentage was a little better.
"Ridgway played us tough tonight, which was good, as this showed the girls that they have to work hard no matter who your opponent is. This was a good game for us in the fact that we were able to play all of our players, giving them some valuable game experience, which will help out down the road."
Kayla Hoohuli led the Lady Dutch with a triple double on Wednesday, as she finished the game with 31 points, 13 rebounds and 10 steals. Rachel Walker checked in with 13 points and eight rebounds. Mandy Gerarge had six points, Kiana Hoohuli five points, Jenna Anderson and Adair Gennocro three each, and Shelby Zomcik and Sloan Foster two each.
