Lady Dutch clinch D9 League title with win over Bradford

The St. Marys Area Lady Dutch registered a hard-fought 46-35 victory over the Bradford Area Lady Owls last night at the SMAHS Dutch Oven.
The victory clinched the District 9 League title for the Lady Dutch. St. Marys is now 8-1 in league play with one league game remaining, to be played on Saturday night when they host Elk Catholic.
Last night’s game was a close affair until the fourth quarter, when St. Marys outscored Bradford by a 17-8 margin. Eight of the Lady Dutch’s 17 points in the final period came from the free-throw line, where they were 18 of 26 for the game.
“I think we played pretty well defensively overall and late in the game, we handled the ball well under pressure. We made some good passes late in the game that were critical,” said St. Marys coach Bob Swanson.
“Adair (Gennocro) handled the ball well and made some clutch shots at the end. Kayla (Hoohuli) played a nice game with 26 points, six rebounds, seven blocks and six steals,” he added.
Kayla Hoohuli led the Lady Dutch offense with 26 points on five field goals, one three and a 13-for-18 night from the foul line. Adair Gennocro added 11 points on three twos, one three and a two-for-four night from the foul line.
Ali Rinfrette led Bradford with 12 points on six field goals. Emily Marshall, Kaserra Owens and Haley Vinelli each added six points.
The first points of the game came at the 6:41 mark, when Hoohuli scored for St. Marys. Jenna Anderson added a foul shot as the Lady Dutch led 3-0. Alex Vinelli hit a three to knot the game at 3-all. Gennocro and Emily Marshall of Bradford traded buckets. Gennocro sank one of two foul shots, giving the Lady Dutch the 6-5 lead after the first period of play.
SMA’s Mandy Gerarge and Rinfrette traded buckets to open the second quarter. Kayla Hoohuli hit a three and a two, giving St. Marys the 13-7 lead. Haley Vinelli made it 13-9. Gennocro hit a three, 16-9. Rinfrette and Haley Vinelli scored for Bradford, cutting the St. Marys lead to 16-13 at the half.
Rinfrette scored the opening points of the second half. Kiana Hoohuli hit a two, with Kayla Hoohuli hitting a two and adding two foul shots, 22-15. Gennocro made it 23-15 with a foul shot. Bradford went on an 8-0 run to tie the game at 23 with 2:45 left in the third period. Anderson sank two foul shots to give St. Marys the 25-23 lead. Rinfrette hit a field goal and Alyssa Ekas scored on a putback for Bradford, 27-25. Kiana Hoohuli tied the game at 27. Kayla Hoohuli sank two of three foul shots with one second remaining in the quarter to give St. Marys the 29-27 lead with one period remaining.
Kayla Hoohuli opened the fourth quarter with two foul shots at the 6:32 mark. She converted two more at the 6:08 mark, giving St. Marys the 33-27 lead. Gennocro added a two, 35-27. Rinfrette scored for the Lady Owls, with Kayla Hoohuli converting a three-point play, 38-29. Hoohuli sank two more with 5:08 left. Haley Vinelli scored on a putback and Owens scored, making it 39-33 with 3:32 left. Kayla Hoohuli sank two foul shots, as did Marshall for Bradford. Gennocro scored with 1:48 left, making it 43-35. A bucket by Kayla Hoohuli gave St. Marys the 45-35 lead with 48 seconds remaining. Hoohuli would add a foul shot as St. Marys won the game by the 46-35 score.

Game notes
The Lady Dutch are now 18-1 overall. They clinched the District 9 League title with an 8-1 record.

St. Marys returns to action Saturday night when they host the Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders in a D9 League game. Junior varsity tips off at 6 p.m., with varsity to follow at 7:30 p.m.

Saturday night will be a “White Out” night for the Dutch fans.

The St. Marys junior varsity defeated Bradford by a 43-29 score.
The Lady Dutch took a 15-8 first-period lead and outscored Bradford 5-2 in the second quarter for a 20-10 halftime lead.
In the third period, the Lady Owls outscored the Lady Dutch 12-6. In the fourth quarter, St. Marys outscored Bradford 17-7 to win the game 43-29.
