The St. Marys Area High School Lady Dutch softball team picked up their third win of the season and second league win with a 5-1 victory over the visiting Altoona Lady Mountain Lions in a game played at the St. Marys Area High softball field under very chilly conditions.
Rachel Ginther picked up the win for the Lady Dutch as she went the distance, giving up just one run on five hits while striking out 12 and issuing no free passes. Kristie Molhollen took the loss for Altoona as she also went the distance, giving up five runs on seven hits, striking out 10, walking one and hitting one batter.
"Our defense was a little shaky early on, but especially in the third inning when they scored their only run; but after that we were very solid," said Manny Gerarge, Lady Dutch coach. "We got some clutch hits today, especially from Raelyn (Cunningham), Savanah (Krivonyak), Hayley (McGowan) and Kali (Quagliani)."
"The lower half of our order really came through today for us," added the coach. "When you can get production all the way through the lineup, that is a big help, and today we received that. The girls played well, both offensive and defensive, and this was a big win for us."
Raelyn Cunningham was the leading hitter for the Lady Dutch on Thursday with a double and single. She was followed by Kali Quagliani with a two-run double. Adding singles for the Lady Dutch were Erica Sorg, Hayley McGowan, Savanah Krivonyak and Cassie Wonderling.
The Lady Mountain Lions were led by Amanda Parrish and Kristie Molhollen, each with a double. Getting singles for the Altoona squad were Hayley Weaver, Didi Rizzo and Brodie Kudlewier.
The first inning was uneventful for both squads, as neither was able to muster any scoring threat. In the second inning, the Lady Mountain Lions opened with back-to-back singles. Rachel Ginther, Lady Dutch pitcher, settled down and retired the next three batters in order on an infield pop fly and two strikeouts. St. Marys was unable to generate an offense in their half of the inning as the score remained 0-0.
Altoona broke the ice in the top of the third when they scored a single tally. Weaver opened with a single, then Berry reached first on an error, but a perfect throw from Quagliani to McGowan nailed Weaver, trying to score on the error, at home plate. Berry went to third on the play and scored on a sacrifice to make it 1-0.
The bottom half of the third proved to be a big inning for the Lady Dutch as they scored four to take the lead for good in the game. Cunningham opened the inning with a double, then Sorg singled. Sorg stole second, then she and Cunningham scored on a double by Quagliani. She then went to third on an infield out and stole home to make it 3-1. McGowan was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a sacrifice by Gerarge, then scored on a single by Krivonyak to make it 4-1.
Altoona managed a double in the fourth inning, but Ginther ended the rally with more strikeouts. St. Marys went down in order in the fourth, thus keeping the score at 4-1.
Altoona went down in order in the next three innings, while the Lady Dutch managed another run in the fifth inning to win the game by a 5-1 score. In the fifth, St. Marys scored when Quagliani reached first on an error, stole second and went to third on a sacrifice, then scored on a McGowan single.
St. Marys is now 3-2 on the season and 2-1 in league play.
St. Marys has a busy week next week as they will play Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. On Wednesday they host DuBois Area, on Thursday they host Ridgway and on Friday they will be at Benzinger Park to take on the Lady Crusaders of Elk County Catholic.
