The last time the St. Marys Area Lady Dutch took on the Elk County Catholic Lady Crusaders at St. Marys Area High School, it was on Dec. 30, 2011 in the championship game of the 2011 Elk County Girls' Holiday Basketball Tournament, a game ECC won 41-35. According to St. Marys Area coach Leona Hoohuli, that game was not on her team's mind on Saturday evening as the two teams once again faced each other at the "Dutch Oven."
"Not really," Hoohuli said regarding whether her squad was focused on avenging that loss. "We want them (the players) to just take it a game at a time, not put pressure on themselves, and just come play the game."
That's exactly what they did on Saturday evening in a close game that saw St. Marys Area hand the Lady Crusaders their first loss of the season, 40-39.
"I thought our half-court defense wasn't very good tonight," said ECC coach Ken Pistner. "That's the most points we've given up for a while. We couldn't put the ball in the basket tonight either, from the field or the foul line."
The score was knotted at 12-all after the first period, St. Marys Area held a 24-20 lead headed into the half, and a 34-30 advantage at the end of three quarters.
"At halftime we focused on boxing out and stepping up our defense, and the girls came out and they did that," Hoohuli said. "I think it was a great team effort, team game, and win because all the girls did their jobs."
St. Marys Area was led offensively by Adair Gennocro with 14 points on two twos, three threes, and a 4-for-5 night from the foul line. Kiana Hoohuli added another 13 points on two twos and an 11-for-13 night from the line.
"St. Marys played a good game, but it seemed like we weren't really focused tonight. It didn't seem like we were here tonight for some reason. We took a little step back tonight," Pistner said.
The Lady Crusaders were led by Taylor DaCanal with 10 points on five twos. Kristy Hanes added eight points on a two and a pair of threes.
The game was a back-and-forth contest from the opening tipoff, with DaCanal and Jenna Anderson trading buckets to start things off. With the score tied at 8-all with about 2:19 remaining in the period, the Lady Dutch pulled out to a four-point lead on foul shots by Hoohuli and a bucket by Gennocro. The Lady Crusaders closed the game back up though in the final minute and a half of the quarter, as both DaCanal and Julia Sweeney made buckets to send the game into the second quarter with the score tied at 12-all.
ECC jumped out to a four-point lead of their own to start the second half on buckets by Jena Struble and DaCanal; however, St. Marys Area retook the lead with a three by Gennocro and a bucket by Becky Krieg. After Lexie Meholic added two points for the Lady Crusaders, Gennocro hit another three and Hoohuli added a pair of foul shots to once again give the Lady Dutch a four-point advantage. Abbi Petrosky and Krieg traded buckets to end the half with the Lady Dutch up 24-20.
Both teams scored a total of 10 points in the third period. St. Marys Area started things off with a pair of foul shots by Gennocro. Kristy Hanes made a three for ECC to cut the score back to within three. Anderson made back-to-back buckets for the Lady Dutch; however, the Lady Crusaders added a pair of buckets of their own by DaCanal and Maggie Sorg. Sloan Foster made a foul shot for the Lady Dutch, the Lady Crusaders added a bucket by Macy Neureiter and a foul shot by Petrosky, and St. Marys ended the scoring in the quarter with a trio of foul shots by Hoohuli.
The Lady Dutch held a 34-30 lead headed into the final quarter of play. Gennocro added four points for St. Marys on a bucket and a pair of foul shots. ECC cut into the lead on a foul shot by Petrosky, a bucket by Meholic, and a three by Hanes to make the score 38-36. Hoohuli made a pair of foul shots to give St. Marys a 40-36 lead with a minute remaining. Meholic hit a three with 15 seconds remaining to draw within one point, but that's as close as ECC got, as the Lady Dutch held on to take the 40-39 win.
The Lady Dutch are now 6-6 and 3-1 in the D9 League. They will return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Punxsutawney to take on the Lady Chucks. Junior varsity is scheduled to get underway at 6 p.m. with varsity to follow at 7:30 p.m.
